Sihlfeld (formerly Upper Sihlfeld ) is a district in District 3 (Wiedikon) of the city of Zurich in Switzerland . The quarter does not go back to a former municipality, but to a tripartite division of Wiedikon by the statistical office.

The quarter consists mostly of rectangular block perimeter developments that were built at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Designed as a practically pure residential area, there is no historical village center. The Birmensdorferstrasse between Schmiede Wiedikon and Goldbrunnenplatz takes on a central function, which according to the classification of the statistical office forms the common border to the Wiediker Quartier Alt-Wiedikon .

geography

There are no topographically conspicuous elevations within the quarter. The Sihlfeld cemetery , which is Zurich's largest green space within a densely built-up area, is striking . The highest point is Triemliplatz (453 m above sea level).

District boundary

The left bank of the Sihl forms the eastern border of the quarter to Enge , in the north the quarter borders from the Sihlhölzlibrücke to the west along the Schimmelstrasse and the Seebahn cut to the Aussersihler Quartiere Werd and further from the Lochergut along the Badenerstrasse to the Letzigraben on the Hard . The western border follows the Letzigraben, where there is a short border to the Altstetten quarter , the rest of the border from Hubertus along Gutstrasse and Triemlifussweg, including the entire Triemliplatz, borders on the Albisrieden quarter . To the south, the border follows the Birmensdorferstrasse, which is shared with the Friesenberg district or, from Heuried, with the Alt-Wiedikon district . The last border section from the smithy follows the Zurlindenstrasse to the Sihl and includes the Sihlhölzli.

Geological Sihlfeld

The name of the quarter derives from the geological subsoil, a wide, groundwater-bearing gravel field that was washed up by the Sihl and countless streams that remove rocks from the Uetliberg . The quarter is not congruent with the geological Sihlfeld, which extends north to the Limmat ("lower Sihlfeld") and is mixed with the Limmat gravel, which also carries groundwater. Until 1787, the lower Sihlfeld also belonged to the former community of Wiedikon, when Aussersihls split off , its affiliation changed. The former sloping path (running diagonally to the block perimeter buildings), which was renamed Sihlfeldstrasse, is reminiscent of the old field name . The street stretches from the Sihlfeld quarter right through the Hard quarter, which also has a field name that differs geographically from the name of the quarter.
