Urban district District 5

Escher Wyss is a district in the Swiss city of Zurich in urban district 5 (industrial district) . In the north, the Limmat forms the border of the quarter. To the east it is by the railway - Viaduct limited the Wipkinger-line and on the south by the railroad tracks. In the west, the quarter ends just behind the Hardturm football stadium .

history

The Escher-Wyss-Quartier was always sparsely populated. At first there were farms there, which in the course of the 20th century gave way to mainly industrial and warehouse buildings. There were also a few additional residential buildings. Since the 1970s, however, the growth in buildings for the service sector has dominated. In the mid-1990s and early 2000s (for example Limmatwest and the development of the Steinfels area in the early 2000s), the housing supply in the district increased.

description

The Escher-Wyss-Quartier is characterized by a large square, the Turbinenplatz . Escher-Wyss-Platz used to have this function , where the striking “ Sirius ” fountain by Annemie Fontana was located in the center from 1972–2009 . The originally provisional Hardbrücke has been running across Escher-Wyss-Platz since 1972 and optically dominates the entire area. Demolition is demanded again and again by the population and neighborhood politicians, which cannot be achieved, at least in the short term. A little west of Escher-Wyss-Platz is the Hardbrücke train station , which connects the area to the Zurich S-Bahn . Important local modes of transport are tram lines 4 and 13, which come from the main train station (travel time about six minutes) and run to the outer quarters of Grünau ( Altstetten ) and Höngg . The trolleybus routes 33 and 72 that run over the Hardbrücke provide connections to the Hard and Wipkingen .

The Swisscom building , the Technopark and the KV Zurich Business School can be found in the quarter . Other witnesses of the industrial age are the Steinfels , Maag , Sulzer-Escher Wyss , Löwenbräu Zurich areas and the Toni dairy. The areas in question have already been converted or are in the process of being converted, but often still have the old, carefully renovated building fabric. The areas that are still in active use include the Swissmill (Stadtmühle), the VBZ tram depot Hard , the Migros distribution center in Herdern (headquarters of the Migros Cooperative Zurich and until 1981 the seat of the Migros Cooperative Federation). In the neighborhood are also the after Migros founder Gottlieb Duttweiler named Duttweilerstrasse and follows it northern bridgehead of Duttweilerbrücke .

The district takes its name from the mechanical engineering company Escher Wyss AG , which was swallowed up by the Sulzer Group in 1969 . Parts of it were later sold to MAN (MAN Turbo), other activities came to Siemens via Voest Alpine , VA Tech , WABAG .
