Uitikon (in Swiss German in the local parlance "Üdike") is a political municipality in the Dietikon district of the canton of Zurich in Switzerland .

geography

Uitikon is located in the lower Reppisch Valley at the transition to the Limmat Valley , on the western flank of the Uetliberg . With regard to jobs, business activities, due to the very good public transport and the cultural offerings, Uitikon is oriented towards the neighboring city of Zurich.

Uitikon is made up of the parts Ringlikon, Waldegg and Uitikon. Ringlikon was a separate civil parish until 1917 . The topographically determined trisection is supported by the road over the Waldegg. This arterial road from Zurich is one of the busiest main roads in the canton.

The former residence of the court lords of Uitikon and Nieder-Urdorf is located on a hill a little south of the village center of Uitikon. Colonel Hans-Jakob Steiner von Hallwil and his successors built “the new house on the Büel” into a castle in the years 1624–1626. In 1650, a baroque facade was built in line with the taste of the time, as the still-preserved portal shows. Even after the fall of the judiciary, the Steiners lived in the castle for a long time. In the autumn of 1874 the Uitikon am Albis asylum was opened as a forced labor institution , after 14 parishes (Aesch, Birmensdorf, Catholic and Reformed Dietikon, Enge, Fluntern, Hottingen, Oberstrass, Riesbach, Uitikon, Urdorf, Wiedikon, Wipkingen and the city of Zurich) in the previous year ) had decided to create a district-owned institution. So the Uitikon manor was bought and expanded. From 1877 the institution received state support. On April 12, 1926, the Cantonal Council decided to convert the institution into a labor education institution, while at the same time abolishing the women's department. In 1979 the institution was expanded to include a closed department.

The judge Hans Jakob Steiner granted his brother's wish in 1625 and set about building a church for Uitikon. The residents were not particularly enthusiastic about this, as they had to do considerable labor . However, one of the judges' sermons resulted in the church with the turret being closed six weeks later. So Uitikon became the first parish with a post-Reformation church. For the Roman Catholic residents, the church of St. Michael was built in 1970 according to plans by the Hungarian architect Dezsö Ercsi.

The structural planning ensures that the population, which is 3900 today, will not significantly exceed 4500. The community has its own indoor swimming pool with sauna, an observatory, a newly designed village center with a hall, a reformed church center and apartments for the elderly. The village center of Uitikon is of regional importance to be protected.

Surname

The community name Uitikon is a linguistic curiosity. Because it is pronounced by the locals as Üdike . On March 30, 1951, the community assembly decided that the official place name will continue unchanged, although it sounds similar to Witikon or Uetikon .

population

According to information from the Statistical Office of the Canton of Zurich (as of 2000), 47.2 percent of the population are Reformed and 27.8 percent are Roman Catholic . 17.6 percent are non-denominational , no information was available for 2.3 percent. There is an Evangelical Reformed parish that belongs to the regional church of the Canton of Zurich . The Catholic Church of St. Michael has existed since 1971; the parish of Aesch - Birmensdorf -Uitikon of the Diocese of Chur is responsible for them. From 1956 to 1967 Ernst Sieber officiated in the Reformed Church of Uitikon.
