Wettswil am Albis (officially called Wettswil until 1976 ) is a political municipality in the Affoltern district of the canton of Zurich in Switzerland .

geography

There are 89 hectares of forest in the municipality. The border sections to the neighboring communities: with Bonstetten 3.9 km, with Stallikon 3.2 km, with Birmensdorf 3.2 km, with Aesch 0.0 km (border point Aesch / Birmensdorf / Bonstetten / Wettswil am Albis). 42.4% of the municipal area is used for agriculture, 23.6% is covered with forest, 5.6% is traffic area and 25.2% is settlement area, 2.7% is water.

history

Wettswil am Albis was first mentioned in 1184 as Wettesweilare , the actual founding of the village dates back to the time of the Great Migration, when the Alemanni settled Switzerland. A tribal chief named Wetto or Wettin, who settled here with his clan, may have given the village his name. In addition to viticulture, clay cutting and brick making experienced a brief boom around 1850; There were no fewer than three hand-held brickworks in the parish at that time.

The coat of arms was first recorded by Gerold Edlibach in 1488 and is said to belong to a noble family of the same name. It has served as the municipal coat of arms since 1675.
