history

Knonau Castle in the regimental book of Junker Gerold Escher .

Knonau was first mentioned in writing in 1045 in a document from the Schänis monastery, in which the Knonau church and the associated Meierhof are named as the property of the monastery. The Meyer von Knonau acted as administrators of this farm. They settled in Zurich in the middle of the 14th century , where they became naturalized. They were soon represented in the city council and even appointed the mayor. Thanks to their connections, they were able to acquire the bailiwick over the village of Knonau and other villages in 1399.

In 1512 the city of Zurich bought the Vogtei Knonau along with some other rights in the area. From then on, a bailiff resided at Knonau Castle , which the city had built as the administrative seat.

When a liberal constitution was enacted in the canton of Zurich in 1830/31, the rural communities were given equal rights with the city. By tradition, Knonau became the capital of the newly founded district . Because of its peripheral location, the district capital was soon relocated to Affoltern am Albis .
