Matthew Church Zurich

The Matthäuskirche is an Evangelical Reformed church in Zurich . It is located in the Unterstrass district on Hoffeld 4 street .

history

In the Neuaffoltern area, which developed rapidly in the first half of the 20th century, the Evangelical Reformed parish of Unterstrass built a parsonage in 1946 and the St. Matthew's Church in 1949–1959. Later on, the parish hall was built on Wehntalerstrasse . The church is still largely in its original condition and thus exemplifies the Landi style of a reformed church building on.

Building description

inside view

The ensemble of parsonage and St. Matthew's Church was built in country style by architect Max Gomringer and fits in well with the surrounding quarter in terms of volume and architectural design. A simple roof turret , in which two bells hang, indicates the ecclesiastical purpose of the building. The different design of the windows is striking: on the north-east facade, the church has a skylight, colored glass windows facing the street and flower-shaped openings on the rear side in the stairwell area. The visitor enters the church via a foyer , which is equipped with parquet flooring and on the underside of the saddle roof has a cassette-like ceiling made of wood and plaster elements.

The most important work of art in the otherwise decidedly simple church are the stained glass windows by Max Hunziker from the 1950s. They are divided into six rectangular segments, with the three left-hand windows showing scenes from the Old Testament and the right-hand windows showing events from the New Testament . Noah's Ark can be seen in a medallion at the bottom left . As a sign of the covenant, the dove brings a green branch. Above it, the burning bush can be seen in the middle window . Moses is depicted as a shepherd, an anticipation of the good shepherd Jesus Christ . The Hebrew letters for the word Yahweh can be read in the burning bush . The upper left picture shows the ten commandments as well as the prophets of the Old Testament. On the right side, Christmas is shown in the medallion below . The transfiguration of Jesus is shown in the middle, the three buildings are visible below, the disciples of Jesus on the left and Jesus on the right, surrounded by Moses and Elias . The window cycle is completed by the picture at the top right, which shows the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ .
