Bernhardt Edskes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bernhardt H. Edskes (born October 28, 1940 in Groningen ) is a Dutch-Swiss organist , organ expert and organ builder in Wohlen .

Life

Bernhardt Hilbrand Edskes was born as the son of Albert Hendrik Edskes, chief secretary at the court in Groningen, and Gritje (from Marguerite) de Graaf and grew up in Groningen as the youngest of four musical brothers. Since the first grade he received piano and organ lessons and at the age of 13 became deputy organist at the Schnitger organ in Noordbroek and at the age of 15 main organist at the Schnitger organ in Uithuizen . In addition to music, he dealt with painting and drawing and deepened this at the Groningen Art Academy.

As a result of the flood disaster of 1953 , numerous new organs had to be built in the Netherlands, for which the Swiss company Metzler also received orders. Bernhardt Edskes designed several new organs for this company. In 1963 he moved to Switzerland and became the artistic director for exterior design and sound conception at Metzler. In 1966 he married the federally qualified structural draftswoman Doris Edskes, b. Utzinger Alber, with whom he has two daughters. After working for Metzler for twelve years, he set up his own workshop in Wohlen in 1975.

For many years Edskes was chairman of the Swiss Association of Organists and lecturer in organ building at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and at the Winterthur Conservatory . He gives concerts all over Europe, gives lectures on organ building and has made various CD recordings. In addition, he was organist at the St. Josef Church in Dietikon until 2000 .

Edskes is known for its consistent restoration practice and reconstructions of organs from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, but has also restored organs from the 19th century and built independent new buildings. As for his brother, the Groningen organologist Cornelius H. Edskes , the work of Arp Schnitger forms the focus and conceptual orientation for many of his new buildings. The completely even intonation is characteristic of Edskes' historicizing new organs . He considers it pseudo-romantic to consciously incorporate irregularities in order to make an organ appear older. Edskes also built stringed keyboard instruments such as harpsichords and clavichords .

List of works (selection)

The size of the instruments is indicated in the fifth column by the number of manuals and the number of sounding registers in the sixth column. A capital “P” stands for an independent pedal, a lowercase “p” for an attached pedal.
