history

Ruin of the church tower

Reepsholt's founding goes back to a donation from the sisters Wendila and Reingert to the diocese of Bremen , which dates back to 983. The diocese soon settled here monks who cultivated the land and built the Reepsholt monastery southeast of today's church .

Today's St. Mauritius Church was built around 1200 and has been the parish church since its construction. In contrast, there was the monastery church in the immediate vicinity. In the 14th century a tower was added to the west side of St. Mauritius, but it was destroyed in a siege in 1474. The tower ruin has since become the town's landmark and one of the most famous buildings in the Wittmund district. In the Middle Ages Reepsholt was one of the Hooge Loogen Ostfriesland.

On July 1, 1972, the former communities Abickhafe , Dose , Hoheesche and Reepsholt merged to form the community Reepsholt. In the course of the municipal reform on August 16, 1972, the municipality Friedeburg was formed from the previous municipalities Bentstreek , Etzel , Friedeburg, Hesel , Horsten , Marx , Reepsholt, Wiesede and Wiesedermeer.

Today Reepsholt is shaped by trade, commerce and agriculture . In the last 20 years, some building areas have emerged so that the village has been able to rejuvenate.

In addition to the church, two more Gulf courtyards are listed as architectural monuments .
