Hesel is a village in the East Frisian community Friedeburg in the district of Wittmund . It has an area of 951 hectares and is home to around 450 residents. Hesel is mostly on the Geest , but also has fen areas . In the east, Hesel lies on the silted-up foothills of the Jade Bay . The height of the village fluctuates relatively strongly between one and ten meters above sea level and gives the local area a face that is relatively untypical for East Frisia. The village borders the Reepsholter and Wieseder Tief, as well as the Ems-Jade Canal . The districts of America, Eibenhausen, Heidhörn, Heselerfeld and Hissenhausen also belong to the locality of Hesel.
Place names
Hesel
The name Hesel probably goes back to a field name that means "Haselwald" and was first mentioned in 1474.
America
The somewhat curious name America for a small colony founded after 1765 to the west of the village center of Hesel probably goes back to an ironic term used by the Heselians for the “New World” of the poor population who moved from the village to the new settlement. The name has nothing to do with the wave of emigration from East Frisia to America, it only started later. Today hikes from "Russia to America" are offered, whereby Russia is a field name in Friedeburg.
history
The foundation date of the place is not known, the first settlements probably emerged in the 11th century. In the Middle Ages, Hesel belonged to the Frisian district of Östringen . After the end of the Frisian freedom , chiefs ruled the place, three chief castles are occupied in Hesel. In the county of East Friesland from 1464 Hesel belonged to the Friedeburg office.
Under Napoleonic rule from 1811, Hesel was incorporated into the Mairie Reepsholt . Subsequently again an independent municipality, Hesel came to the Wittmund district in 1884.
On July 1, 1972, the former communities Abickhafe , Dose , Hoheesche and Reepsholt merged to form the community Reepsholt. In the course of the municipal reform on August 16, 1972, the municipality Friedeburg was formed from the previous municipalities Bentstreek , Etzel , Friedeburg, Hesel, Horsten , Marx , Reepsholt, Wiesede and Wiesedermeer .
The former post office is a listed building .
