history

St. Mauritius Church

The sun stone by Horsten , a boulder with carved circles from the Bronze Age, found in 1963, testifies to an early settlement of the place .

Horsten was first mentioned in 1134. In the 16th century, when the black brackish reached its greatest extent, Horsten had access to the North Sea and was able to profit from it economically.

On July 1, 1972, the former communities Abickhafe , Dose , Hoheesche and Reepsholt merged to form the community Reepsholt. In the course of the municipal reform on August 16, 1972, the municipality Friedeburg was formed from the previous municipalities Bentstreek , Etzel , Friedeburg, Hesel , Horsten, Marx , Reepsholt, Wiesede and Wiesedermeer .
