Bentstreek is a district of the municipality Friedeburg in the district of Wittmund in East Frisia .

history

Bentstreek was laid out from 1915 as part of the moor cultivation and is thus by far the youngest district of the Friedeburg community. Previously, the area - like the nearby Wiesmoor , which was only populated from 1906 - was a wide, uninhabited raised bog.

However, after the cultivation work began, the first settler did not settle until 1931. The following year the development of the area began with the construction of a road from Oltmannsfehn to Marx .

Bentstreek, predominantly agricultural, extends over 1265 hectares. In addition to residual moorland and settlement areas, these are agricultural areas. The Lengen Sea is located south of Bentstreek . In the Bentstreek / Lengener Meer area, the districts of Wittmund , Aurich , Leer , Ammerland and Friesland meet.

In the Bentstreek area in 1955 a human shin with a foot and leather shoe was found in the moor during drainage work, which has since been referred to as the Bentstreeker's foot. According to archaeologists, this is probably an offering from the younger Bronze Age .

On July 1, 1972, the former communities Abickhafe , Dose , Hoheesche and Reepsholt merged to form the community Reepsholt. In the course of the municipal reform on August 16, 1972, the municipality Friedeburg was formed from the previous municipalities Bentstreek, Etzel , Friedeburg, Hesel , Horsten , Marx , Reepsholt, Wiesede and Wiesedermeer .
