Dettmar Coldewey

Dettmar Coldewey (born December 31, 1907 in Rüstersiel ; † November 18, 1973 in Wilhelmshaven ) was a home historian and author of numerous publications on the history of Wilhelmshaven and the East Frisian region.

Life and education

Coldewey studied at the Cologne Werkkunstschule as well as at the University and State Art School Hamburg . As a trade teacher for arts and crafts , he joined the school service in the city of Rüstringen (today Wilhelmshaven) in 1935. During the Second World War he was drafted into the navy and built up the marine vocational college in Wesermünde during this time . In 1947 he returned to Wilhelmshaven and taught here as a senior commercial teacher until he was transferred to the district vocational school in Varel as deputy headmaster in 1956 .

His most important publications include the picture map of the Jade region (1960) and the picture map of the history of East Friesland (1967), both published by Verlag Lohse-Eissing Wilhelmshaven and as a reprint in 2015 by Brune-Mettcker-Verlag Wilhelmshaven. Coldewey was one of the four former authors of the Wilhelmshavener Heimatlexikon , the 1st edition of which was published in 1972 by Brune Druck- und Verlagsgesellschaft mbH Wilhelmshaven.

Coldewey took over the chairmanship of the Wilhelmshavener Heimatverein "Die Boje" in 1963 and from then on devoted himself to the idea of ​​making connections in the local history transparent to the citizens of the city. His work as district commissioner for nature and landscape protection can also be seen as a complement to his activities for the protection and preservation of natural landscapes and historical sites.

Two streets are named after him in the Wilhelmshaven-Rustersiel district and in the Grafschaft district of Schortens .
