Cornelius H. Edskes
Cornelius H. Edskes (also Cor Edskes ; * 1925 in Groningen ; † September 7, 2015 in Haren ) was a Dutch organ expert and leading Arp Schnitger researcher.
life and work
Edskes was born as the son of Albert Hendrik Edskes, chief secretary at the court in Groningen, and Gritje (from Marguerite) de Graaf and grew up in Groningen as the oldest of four musical brothers. He received his first organ lessons from Johan van Meurs, the organist at the Groningen Aa-kerk . From 1941 he played on the Schnitger organ from Uithuizen and was organist at the Doopsgezindekerk in Groningen from 1944.
He was shaped by his teachers Friso Molenaar, George Stam and Flor Peeters , but also by Helmut Walcha . In his first years he gave organ concerts at home and abroad and made radio recordings, but later gave up in favor of his organological research and his work as an organ expert. He learned practical organ building at the Doornbos company in Groningen.
From 1957 to 1963 Edskes was a member of the organ commission of the Dutch Reformed Church and during this time he accompanied over 50 organ projects, restorations and new buildings. From 1963 to 1968 he worked as an assistant to Hendrik Leendert Oussoren for the Dutch preservation of monuments and was involved in over 30 restorations of historical instruments. He then became a freelance organ expert.
For the organic journal Het Orgel he was editor from 1954 to 1957 and editor-in-chief from 1957 to 1963.
As with his brother, the organ builder Bernhardt Edskes , the work of Arp Schnitger was the focus of his interest. A collaboration with Gustav Fock began in 1939 when Edskes inventoried the organs of the province of Groningen for his Schnitger biography . Edskes was an expert on over 30 restoration projects, including the Schnitger organs in Stade / St. Cosmae (1972–1975), Cappel (1976/1977), the Martinikerk in Groningen (1976/1984), in Grasberg (1980–1985), Lüdingworth (1981/1982), Steinkirchen (1987/1991) and Hamburg / Sankt Jacobi (1993).
Edskes was regarded as one of the most internationally renowned organ experts in the field of organ restoration and reconstruction. With his detailed documentation he set standards for historically informed organ building in theory and practice. Organ pipes are measured and described on the basis of up to 30 criteria. For the proportions of the rows of pipes and the case proportions, Edskes has further developed the system for recording and displaying the data. As early as the 1950s, he was involved in the restoration of the oldest instruments in the East Frisian organ landscape by Ahrend & Brunzema , the organs in Westerhusen (1955), Uttum (1956/57) and Rysum (1959/60). At his suggestion, for the first time in the history of restoration, the medium-tone tuning was applied to instruments for worship and the original keyboard ranges were realized with a short octave . In Denmark he was the expert for the reconstruction of the organ in Helsingør (1960) and the restoration of the organs in Roskilde Cathedral (1991) and Clausholm Castle (1997), in Norway for the organs of Kongsberg Kirke (1993) and Røros Kirke (1994-1996).
In the Netherlands Edskes was occasionally active in organ building in the 1950s, for example with the voicing of the organs in Nieuwolda (1950) and the Groningen Martinikerk ( Rückpositiv , 1952). In 1951 he designed a new Rückpositiv for Ruinerwold. Together with Simon Graafhuis, he reconstructed three registers of the Schnitger organ in Noordbroek from 1955 to 1958 and in this way restored the original disposition of the Rückpositiv. Other Dutch projects in which Edskes provided advice were the organs in Amsterdam / Nieuwe Kerk (main and choir organ), Groningen / Nieuwe Kerk, Medemblik, Kantens and 't Zandt. A fruitful collaboration was established with the German organ builder Jürgen Ahrend and the Danish organ building workshop Marcussen . Mediated by Edskes, they built various new organs in the Netherlands and restored important historical organ works there. A highlight was the restoration of the Schnitger organ in the Martinikerk in Groningen by Ahrend.
In 1996 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Gothenburg for his services to the organ project The North German Organ Research Project at Göteborg University .
