The Strickhof is the competence center for education and services in agriculture, food and housekeeping. As the main department of the Office for Landscape and Nature (ALN) in the building department of the Canton of Zurich , he offers interdisciplinary basic and advanced training as well as services in the areas geared to independent companies

Strickhof provides its services at five locations in Lindau (main location), Affoltern am Albis (housekeeping at secondary schools with course centers at seven other locations), Au-Wädenswil , Winterthur-Wülflingen and Zurich (Technopark).

history

In 1386, the "am Strick" estate, later the Strickhof location near Irchel, City of Zurich, was first mentioned. From 1818 to 1826 there was the first agricultural school for the poor in Bläsihof, Winterberg in the municipality of Lindau. In 1853 the cantonal agricultural school Strickhof was founded in Irchel , City of Zurich. Between 1912 and 1927 six regional agricultural schools were founded in the canton of Zurich (Affoltern am Albis, Bülach, Uster, Stäfa, Wetzikon, Winterthur-Wülflingen). In 1976 the Strickhof was relocated to Eschikon, Lindau (ZH) on a former and rounded-off Maggi area. In 1998 the agricultural schools in Lindau, Wetzikon and Wülflingen were merged to form the "Strickhof". In 2011, the “Housekeeping at Middle Schools” course came under the umbrella of the Strickhof as a service mandate from the Education Directorate. In 2012, the vocational training center Wädenswil (BZW) was integrated with the courses food technologist ( Federal Certificate of Proficiency , EFZ ), food practitioner ( Eidgenössisches Berufsattest, EBA ) (EFZ), winemaker (EFZ), wine technologist (EFZ), gardener (EFZ) specializing in tree nurseries and perennials . On October 31, 2015 there was the official groundbreaking of Agrovet-Strickhof, the education and research center, a joint project of the Strickhof, the ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich . In 2017 the Agrovet-Strickhof company was opened.

In accordance with the “Zurich Agriculture Mission Statement”, adopted by the Cantonal Council on October 4, 1995, the Strickhof follows a cantonal agricultural policy in which training and advice are central elements. The canton of Zurich is also committed to multifunctional, family-run and entrepreneurial agriculture. The Strickhof offers a total of 44 courses in the areas of basic and advanced training.

Agricultural services and courses

The agricultural services of the Strickhof are laid down in the agricultural legislation of the federal government and the cantons as state advice. The goals formulated therein include

  • the production of high quality food
  • to promote competitiveness and market adaptation
  • preserve the natural resources and the landscape
  • to take an active role in the development of rural areas
  • to promote the quality of life and social position of farming families.

The Strickhof employees mainly provide expert advice

  • via print media, newsletters, websites, direct mail, SMS
  • as major events “Strickhof xy days” with industry and companies
  • with specialist courses
  • by working with producer organizations
  • via information events
  • through group consultations / working groups / professional groups
  • with project studies by students from higher technical schools
  • On a case-by-case basis, individual consultations are carried out on request.

Training and testing company

The Strickhof training and testing company fulfills several functions:

  • Diverse, modern farm with all important livestock species as well as arable, fodder, fruit, wine and horticulture with around 100 hectares of agricultural land
  • Training and further education on the exercise object in field & stable for both learners and practicing farmers
  • Knowledge generation for Strickhof specialists, practical contact with the industry and research.

Agrovet-Strickhof, education and research center

The Strickhof, the ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich work together in agricultural education and research: the joint education and research center Agrovet-Strickhof is located in Lindau. There, university education and research in the field of agricultural and veterinary sciences are linked with the practical needs of agriculture. The center consists of dairy cattle and fattening stalls as well as a livestock stable for the training of veterinary medicine students. The ETH Zurich also implemented a metabolism center in which they conduct research with the University of Zurich in the field of efficient and low-emission livestock farming.

In 2006 and 2008, the Canton of Zurich, the ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich made fundamental decisions on Agrovet-Strickhof. In 2011 a preliminary study was approved by the government council of the canton of Zurich. In 2014, a property loan was approved by the Cantonal Council with 167 votes to 0. The building application has been submitted. Construction began in 2015 after the building permit was granted. The Agrovet-Strickhof opened in 2017.
