Henry Winkler (* 30th October 1945 in New York City as Henry Franklin Winkler ) is an American actor , director and film producer . He became known through the role of Arthur Fonzarelli in the television series Happy Days .

Life

Henry Winkler's Jewish parents, Harry Irving († 1995) and Ilse Anna Maria Winkler (née Hadra , 1913–1999), fled Germany to the United States in 1939 on the eve of World War II . The parents settled in New York City, where Henry was born on October 30, 1945. His father was a manager in a timber company. Winkler graduated from Emerson College in 1967 and the Yale School of Drama in 1970 . 1978 Emerson College awarded him an honorary doctorate in literature .

Winkler has been married to Stacey Weitzman since 1978, she brought a son into the marriage, and the couple have a daughter (* 1980) and a son (* 1983) together. Henry Winkler's cousin is the actor Richard Belzer .

Career

In the early 1970s he appeared in various television programs. In 1974 he played one of the bigger roles alongside Sylvester Stallone in the movie Brooklyn Blues . From 1974 to 1984 he played one of the leading roles in the television series Happy Days as Fonzie .

He was nominated for a Golden Globe in 1978 for the lead role in the comedy Heroes of Today , in which Sally Field and Harrison Ford appeared alongside Winkler . For his role as Wall Street - Broker Chuck Lumley in the comedy Night Shift - The morgue freaks entirely out of Ron Howard , he was nominated in 1983 for the same price. In the 2006 comedy click he appeared on the side of Adam Sandler , Kate Beckinsale and Christopher Walken . He had a recurring supporting role in the television series Royal Pains .

Winkler also directed the 1984 drama All the Kids Do It, starring George Dzundza and Danny DeVito . For this film he was nominated for the Daytime Emmy in 1984 and won the award as a producer. Since 2018 he can be seen in a leading role in the television series Barry , for whose portrayal he received an Emmy for "Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series ".
