action

Scott Voss, 42, a former college wrestler , works as a biology teacher at a high school in Boston , Massachusetts . Scott Voss was “Teacher of the Year” ten years earlier, but has since become demotivated by the school system. He is hardly involved in school matters or tries to make the lessons exciting. When he learns that the school has to cut all non-curricular activities, including the music program, due to budget cuts, he begins to look for a way to raise money to continue the program, otherwise the music teacher Marty Strep (whose wife is expecting a child) would lose his job; it takes $ 48,000 to save it.

Initially, Voss also works in evening school as a teacher in an integration course in which immigrants prepare for the citizenship test. There he met the Dutch fitness trainer Niko, who also taught mixed martial arts , among other things . Motivated by the high fighting fees, Voss begins to work on the side as a mixed martial arts fighter in order to earn the money he needs for school on his own. Initially considered crazy by his colleagues and acquaintances, he soon succeeds in getting his students and teaching staff behind him. In addition, he himself finds motivation again to offer his students exciting lessons and to inspire his students again. He also manages to establish a relationship with the school nurse Bella Flores, with whom he had tried in vain to date for years.

When Joe Rogan and Dana White give him the chance to fight in the UFC league , where the loser of a fight is rewarded with $ 10,000, he sees his chance to find the last remaining amount to save Marty's job . The evening before, he heard from Bella by phone at the Las Vegas venue that the deputy principal Elkins had been embezzling funds from the school for years and that the hard-won fund was now empty. There is now only one option left to win the fight and win $ 50,000.

Against all odds, after two rounds without a chance in the third round, he won the fight by knockout against the big favorite Ken "the executioner" Dietrich and thus saved the music program and Marty's job.

The final scene shows the celebrations as the class that Scott is teaching has passed the naturalization test and is being sworn in.

Trivia

The name Scott Voss also appeared in King of Queens : in the episode The Capers War , when Kevin James as Doug Heffernan tries to open his locked car door. A man in a delivery truck offers to help. As he drives on, you can see the words "Scott Voss - Locksmith" on the van.

reception

The heavyweight received an average rating of 39% at Rotten Tomatoes based on 95 ratings.

“The routinely staged comedy lives above all from the presence of its main actor Kevin James, but just as cleverly varies the idea that it depends on the commitment of each individual. In the stale finale, however, the conventional standards of the US sports film genre dominate. "
