Chael Sonnen (born April 3, 1977 in Milwaukie , Oregon ) is an American MMA fighter and occurs or competed in the middle and light heavyweight division. Sonnen is currently under contract with Bellator . He is considered an excellent wrestler. In 2000 he was second in the weight class up to 85 kg at the World University Championships in Greco-Roman wrestling . Sonnen is an All-American when it comes to wrestling.

Mixed martial arts career

Beginnings

Sonnen began his mixed martial arts career at the age of 20 when he defeated Ben Hailey on points on May 10, 1997. His next (documented) fight did not take place until almost five years later on March 30, 2002. In this fight he defeated the later Strikeforce - and UFC fighter Jason Miller also on points. These two fights took place in the middleweight division, but Sonnens' subsequent fights in the light heavyweight division.

On April 13, 2002, Sonnen took part in the DangerZone LHW Tournament , which lasted two rounds, and won this and with it the DangerZone Lightheavyweight Championship . After two more wins followed on January 25, 2003 Sunnen's first defeat when he was defeated by Trevor Prangley by giving up in the first round. This defeat was followed by a draw with Akihiro Gono and his second defeat. His opponent was the future UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Forrest Griffin , who defeated him in the first round by giving up.

After this defeat, Sonnen set up a winning streak over five fights, but lost his next three fights, two of them against Jeremy Horn. He won his next fight, but lost the next one. Sonnen won his next two fights and was awarded a UFC contract.

First time in the UFC

He made his UFC debut on October 7, 2005 against Renato Sobral and lost it by giving up in the second round. After this fight he switched to middleweight division and defeated in that Trevor Pringley on April 6, 2006 on points. On May 27, 2006, he played his third fight against Jeremy Horn. Sonnen stepped in for Evan Tanner, who had to cancel the fight due to personal problems. As in the second fight, Sonnen lost again by giving up against Horn. He was released shortly afterwards.

According to UFC

After his release, Sonnen won five fights in a row. He then received on December 12, 2007 a title fight for the WEC Middleweight Championship against Paulo Filho. The end of the fight was described as controversial because the referee stopped the fight when Sonnen was in a triangle choke and, in the opinion of the referee, did not respond when the referee asked if he wanted to give up. Sonnen, however, said that he had told the referee that he did not want to give up. A rematch should then take place on March 26, 2008, but Filho was eliminated due to drug withdrawal. Instead, Sonnen met Bryan Baker, whom he defeated on points. The rematch took place on November 5, 2008, the sun could win on points. Filho exceeded the weight limit, so it wasn't about the title. After the fight, Filho announced he would give up the title. However, due to the integration of the middleweight division of the WEC into the UFC, it did not come to that, as it brought Sonnen back to the UFC.

Return to the UFC

With the dissolution of the middleweight division of the WEC, he came back to the UFC. But he lost his first fight by giving up against Demian Maia. In his next fight, he replaced Yushin Okami, who was injured earlier, against Dan Miller. Sonnen won the fight on points. He was also able to win his next fight on points, this time against Yushin Okami. With his subsequent victory over Nate Marquardt he got a title fight against Anderson Silva (martial artist) awarded. Sonnen was able to win the first four rounds, but was then forced to give up in the fifth round. In the sun, increased testosterone levels were found, which is why he was banned for a year.

Sonnen said he was diagnosed with hypogonadism and needed Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT). The suspension remained, however, but was shortened to six months. On October 8, 2011, he returned with an abandonment victory over Brian Stann. He then won a fight against Michael Bisping on points, whereupon he received a rematch against Anderson Silva. Sonnen lost again, this time by TKO in round 2. Sonnen returned to the light heavyweight division. It was first set a fight against Forrest Griffin , this was canceled because Sonnen was set as coach for The Ultimate Fighter and after the season ended against the other coach and light heavyweight champion Jon Jones for his title. Sonnen lost this fight on April 27, 2013 by TKO in the first round. His next fight took place on August 17, 2013. There he faced Mauricio Rua , whom he was able to defeat by giving up in the first round. Here for he received the Submission of the Night award.

In 2014, Sonnen was banned for two years because a doping test found him HGH and EPO .
