World Extreme Cagefighting (abbreviation: WEC ) was an American company that held mixed martial arts fights . The organization existed from 2001 to 2010 and was then incorporated into the Ultimate Fighting Championship . Up until then, the WEC had held 53 events.

WEC was founded in June 2001 by Reed Harris and Scott Adams. The events took place mainly in Lemoore , California and were broadcast on the American television channel HDNet . At the end of 2006, WEC was bought by Zuffa LLC , the owner of the UFC. From then on, the WEC should concentrate on the lower weight classes, including featherweight and bantamweight, two fighting weights that do not exist in the UFC. WEC events were broadcast on the American sports channel Versus , in Canada on The Sports Network and The Score and in Australia on Setanta Sports . In January 2011, the WEC was incorporated into the UFC and the title holders in featherweight and bantamweight were taken over.

One of the WEC champions is former UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz . Other titleholders included Ron Waterman , Frank Shamrock , Chris Leben , Anthony Pettis , Carlos Condit , Karo Parisyan , Urijah Faber and Brian Stann .
