Dominick Cruz (born September 3, 1985 in San Diego ) is an American mixed martial arts fighter . He was the last World Extreme Cagefighting bantamweight titleholder and is the first in the Ultimate Fighting Championship . He has a match record of 22 wins and two losses.

Cruz was born in San Diego and raised in Tucson . He started in seventh grade with rings and in high school with boxes . He had his victorious MMA debut on January 29, 2005 at an event by Rage in the Cage , an organizer where he stayed for the next five fights. He then appeared three times at Total Combat before he fought a title fight in the WEC on March 24, 2007 as a featherweight with a flawless record. There he succumbed to a guillotine choke from Urijah Faber in the first round . After another fight at Total Combat, he competed in the bantamweight class of the WEC against Charlie Valencia in June 2008 and won on points. This was followed by victories over Ian McCall, Ivan Lopez, Joseph Benavidez and finally on March 6, 2010 a title fight against the previously undefeated Brian Bowles was scheduled. He broke his hand in the first round and gave up in the break before the third round. Cruz's first title defense was against Benavidez in August with a narrow point decision. On December 16, he played his last fight against Scott Jorgensen at WEC 53 before the WEC was incorporated into the UFC . As a result, he also competed for the title of the first UFC Bantamweight Champion . Dominick Cruz defeated Jorgensen after five rounds with a point decision.

Cruz was able to successfully defend the title against Urijah Faber and Demetrious Johnson , but was seriously injured shortly afterwards and was unable to compete in the UFC for almost three years, which is why he was stripped of his world title. On January 17, 2016, Cruz got it back by beating TJ Dillashaw . At UFC 207 on December 30, 2016, he lost his title to Cody Garbrandt after a unanimous point defeat.
