Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (born November 25, 1981 in Curitiba , Brazil ) is a Brazilian MMA fighter in the weight category under 93 kg and was until March 19, 2011 UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. The main style of Rua is Muay Thai , Rua also has the black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu . Together with numerous well-known fighters (among them Wanderlei Silva ) and his brother Murilo "Ninja" Rua , he belonged to the Chute Boxe Academy in Curitiba (Brazil). At the end of 2007, however, the Rua brothers left the Chute Boxe Academy and founded their own fighting school called Universidade da Luta (UDL) in 2008.

Mauricio Rua was long under contract with the Japanese MMA association Pride FC . His professional balance is currently 24-10-0 (SNU) of which 19 (T) KOs. After victories over Quinton "Rampage" Jackson , Alistair Overeem (twice), Antonio Rogerio "Minotoro" Nogueira , Ricardo Arona and Kevin Randleman within just two years, he was considered number 1 in the light heavyweight division in mid-2007 (up to 93 kg, resp. 205 lbs). However, his career and health have been going downhill since then.

At just 24 years old, Rua was the youngest fighter to ever win the Middleweight Grand Prix at Pride FC (2005). In front of 77,000 spectators in the Saitama Super Arena, he defeated both Alistair Overeem and Ricardo Arona in the final by knockout. Arona had previously defeated Rua's mentor Wanderlei Silva on points in the semifinals that took place on the same evening .

He suffered his defeats against Renato "Babalu" Sobral (2003) by giving up after a guillotine choke and in the heavyweight class against Mark Coleman (2006) by TKO after a broken arm through no fault of his own. Rua lost his first fight at UFC 76 by surrendering to Forrest Griffin (2007).

On January 17, 2009, Mauricio Rua returned to the cage after an injury-related (two knee injuries) break of around 16 months. At UFC 93 he was able to take revenge on Mark Coleman and won with an unconvincing performance by TKO in round 3. On April 18, 2009 he was able to contest the long-awaited fight with Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell at UFC 97 in Canada and successfully through TKO win in round 1. In this fight, he built on his achievements of the successful years 2004-2007 and made the jump back into the top 10 of his weight class.

After a controversial lost fight against Lyoto Machida in 2009 , he managed to win the UFC 205 pound belt in the 2010 rematch. But the first defense on March 19, 2011 at UFC 128 failed and he had to surrender the title to his challenger Jon Jones after TKO in the third round .
