Jonathan Dwight Jones (born July 19, 1987 in Rochester , New York ), called Jon "Bones" Jones , is an American mixed martial arts fighter from Endicott . Jones has a solid background in wrestling , Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai and is currently training in Jackson's Submission Fighting in Albuquerque , New Mexico. He has been the Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight title holder since December 29, 2018 , having held the belt between 2011 and 2015.

Career

In 2007, Jones began his MMA career with Team BombSquad in Cortland, New York. In 2008 he signed a contract for four fights with the UFC with a match record of six wins and zero losses, which made him the youngest fighter in the association at the time. He made his UFC debut in August with a points win over Andre Gusmao. In January 2009 he defeated Stephan Bonnar also on points. At UFC 100 in July 2009, he defeated Jake O'Brien with a guillotine choke in the second round. Because of unauthorized elbow strikes he was then disqualified against Matt Hamill in the final event of The Ultimate Fighter 10 . His next fights, against Brandon Vera in March 2010 and Vladimir Matyushenko in August, he won both by TKO in the first round. After Ryan Bader was defeated by a guillotine choke in February 2011 , a title fight against Mauricio "Shogun" Rua was scheduled for March 19, 2011 . Jones dominated the fight from the start and won by TKO in the third round. This made him the youngest UFC title holder to date.

On September 24, 2011 he had his first title defense against Rampage Jackson , whom he defeated in the fourth round by giving up. He defeated his next opponent, Lyoto Machida , on December 10, 2011, also by giving up, this time in round 2, and thus defended his title for the second time. His next title defense against Rashad Evans followed on May 21, 2012 . There were various verbal attacks between the two previous training partners before the fight. Jones won the fight on points. His next title defense was scheduled for September 1, 2012 against Dan Henderson . However, this fight was canceled due to an injury to Henderson, as was the entire event. On September 22nd, 2012 he successfully defended his title against the Brazilian Vitor Belfort by giving up in the 4th round. In April 2013 he was able to defeat Chael Sonnen in the first round and thus set the record for most title defenses in Tito Ortiz's lightweight heavyweight division.

On September 21, 2013 he defeated the Swede Alexander Gustafsson - albeit controversial - on points and thus set the record for the most title defenses in his weight class. He kept his winning streak by a dominant points win over his rival Daniel Cormier. In April 2015, the UFC stripped him of the light heavyweight title before the conclusion of a lawsuit for hit and run in which he injured a pregnant woman. His sponsor ended the collaboration. A year later he returned to the UFC and won the interim title in the light-heavyweight division against Ovince Saint Preux .

In July 2016, Jones should have fought Daniel Cormier . However, he gave a positive doping test for clomiphene and letrozole during a training check and was banned for one year. After the suspension expired, the duel against Cormier at UFC 214 was made up for in 2017 . Jones defeated his arch-rival with a heavy knockout in the third round and took the light heavyweight title back. After that, however, he gave another positive doping test, this time for dehydrochloromethyltestosterone . Then Daniel Cormier got the light heavyweight belt back.

The light heavyweight belt became vacant after arch-rival Cormier moved to heavyweight, and Jon Jones won it back in his second duel with Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 232 . Unlike in their first fight, Jones won this time dominantly through a TKO in the third round.
