Alexander Gustafsson (born January 15, 1987 in Stockholm ) is a former Swedish MMA fighter who competed in the light heavyweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship . Gustafsson, who is also known by his nickname The Mauler , gained notoriety primarily for his fight against Jon Jones at UFC 165 , who won many awards for the 2013 fight.

Career

Gustafsson started his MMA career in 2007 and joined the UFC in 2009 with a fight record of eight wins from eight fights. At UFC 105 he made his debut against Jared Hamman , whom he knocked out after 41 seconds. In his second UFC fight, however, he lost to Phil Davis with an anaconda choke . Gustafsson then started a winning streak of six fights against strong opponents such as Thiago Silva and Mauricio Rua . On September 21, 2013, there was then a clash with light heavyweight world champion Jon Jones, who until then was de facto undefeated and a big favorite. Gustafsson's strong boxing and takedown defense put Jones hard, however, which is why the judge's decision in favor of the defending champion was extremely controversial. Many trade magazines later labeled the meeting as the fight of 2013. In 2014 Gustafsson won against Jimi Manuwa , but in January 2015 he suffered a heavy knockout loss to Anthony Johnson . In October 2015, Gustafsson's second attempt at the light heavyweight title failed when he was also just defeated on points against the new champion Daniel Cormier .

After fighting Anthony Smith on June 1, 2019, he announced his retirement from MMA .
