history

Schwanberg has been a parish since 1244. The core of the Romanesque church building from the 13th century has been preserved. In the 14th century, a Gothic chapel was added to the north. At the end of the 15th century, the church was expanded to include a late Gothic choir east of the square choir tower. The upper floor of the tower is baroque. In 1896 the late Gothic choir was bricked up and made into a sacristy and the nave was expanded to the west and the entire church building was heavily renewed. In 1979 the outside of the church was restored.

architecture

The core of the Romanesque church building has been preserved and has been heavily renewed with Gothic, Late Gothic and Baroque extensions. The elongated six-bay nave has Gothic bays to the east with a mesh rib vault on three-quarter wall columns with octagonal bases. The western nave bays and the west facade were built in 1896. To the north is a Gothic three-bay chapel with a ribbed vault with round keystones. The Romanesque choir square with a barrel vault is the first floor of the tower. To the east of the tower is a late Gothic choir with a five-eighth end with buttresses stepped on the outside, which was bricked up in 1896 and now serves as a sacristy. The upper floor of the tower with its baroque bevelled corners emphasized by pilasters carries an onion with a lantern.

Outside in the northern slope of the former choir is a Christophorus fresco from 1510/1520, which is whitewashed. Outside at the end of the choir is a Biedermeier tombstone Andreas Töpper and Helga Töpper, 1829, made of cast iron from Mariazell.
