history

The earliest recorded mention of Scherbda comes from July 10, 1229. The original document has been preserved and is in the Marburg State Archives. Around 1249 the place is mentioned again as Scerbede . About 500 meters north of the village you come across the Hinterscherbda corridor , the original settlement area of the village; it is said to have been abandoned because of its poor water supply. The place name Scherbda is derived from a soil feature. The loamy, heavily calcareous soil dries out quickly in the sun and forms fragments of shards like slabs. The derivation from the Scherf family would be just as plausible, representatives of this family clan were Burgmannen in Treffurt and at Creuzburg Castle . This is why the place and personal names Scherf, Scherne, Scirbede are often mixed up in Creuzburg documents. The place Scherbda initially belonged to the fiefdom of the landgrave castle men of Creuzburg , who also appeared as court lords in the place ( Creuzburg office ). A branch of the von Wangenheim family took over their property as early as the 16th century . The estate next to the Scherbda church is also known as Wangenheim Castle . Older descriptions of the place tell of the castle-like complex with the remains of a stone defense tower.

In 1871 the place, which also included the Hinterscherbda desert , had 445 inhabitants.

Scherbda does not have a watercourse suitable for the mill. In 1850 a farmer tried in vain for days to have his grain milled in the surrounding towns because of the great drought. Finally he found a windmill in Netra in Hesse and with the help of numerous schnapps persuaded him to move to Scherbda; so Scherbda got a (wind) mill .

From 1941 to 1945 the prisoner-of-war labor command 118B with Serbian prisoners of war was stationed here. The prisoners of war had to take over the work of the Scherbda men fighting on the front. After the war there were 600 inhabitants with the resettlers and refugees. In 1994 Scherbda was incorporated into Creuzburg.

Culture and sights

church

The historic town center with church ( location → )

The first church in Scherbda was probably built in the 15th century. Gideon von Wangenheim laid the foundation stone for the church that exists today on May 22, 1671. The building that defines the townscape was given a slate roof, which was replaced by a tile roof in two steps (1962 and 1971). Now, after another restoration, the church has its familiar slate roof again. The tower rises on the east side of the building, it is massive and has an eight-sided sloping dome covered with slate.

Village green

In the local area is the Scherbdaer Dorfanger. From the southwest, the main entrance is via a small set of stairs to the old court and assembly area. Another, level access was from the north. These entrances are flanked by two stone pillars. The complex is framed by a curtain wall. Three old linden trees rise in the center of the circular square and provide shade. They surround the place of justice, which consists of a stone table and the accompanying stone benches. There is no longer a pillory column. Today the square has lost its former horror and serves as a gathering place and meeting point.

Stadtbergbuche natural monument

The city beech , a 200 to 250 year old red beech , has been a natural monument since 1966 . According to legend, the administrator of the Scherbda estate is said to have killed a serf at this point, whose father planted the beech tree in memory of the victim.
