Volteroda is a district of Schnellmannshausen ; in the 19th century it was also known as the "Oberster Hof" and came to the town of Treffurt in the Wartburg district in Thuringia when Schnellmannshausen was incorporated in 1993 .

location

Volteroda is located on the federal highway 250 about nine kilometers south of the core town of Treffurt at the southern end of a valley that was formed by the Schnellmannshäuser Bach .

history

In the High Middle Ages, the Schnellmannshausen valley belonged to the Lords of Treffurt , whose center of power, Normannstein Castle, is still within sight. In the fourteenth century, the reign of the Treffurter was violently ended, before that a bloody family feud with the Spangenberg cousins raged for several decades. The areas administered as Ganerbschaft Treffurt represent only a remainder of the places previously occupied by the Landgraves of Hesse and Thuringia and the Archbishopric-Mainz troops. The part that was separated from the Landgraviate of Thuringia as compensation for the war costs went to the Wettin Office of Creuzburg and includes that upper Schnellmannshausen valley with Volteroda, Schrapfendorf and Hattengehau as well as half (upper) part of Schnellmannshausen. At the end of the 14th century, (which also places Reimannshausen and Hilvershausen) included with the exception of Schnellmannshausen all places in the valley to deserted villages become. The resettlement was slow, probably not until the 16th century. In his local history writing Ifta in the past and present , the Ifta teacher C. L. Hesse reports about Volteroda: In this place Volteroda a parish church had already been founded by the companion of St. Boniface. This first cell was later administered by the monastery in Großburschla. The seat of the parish was moved to Ifta in the High Middle Ages. Before the Reformation, pastor Peter Münzmeister owned an estate in Volteroda, which was simply named Sachsenhof after the later owner Hans Sachs . The re-established farms in Schrapfendorf, Hattengehau and Volteroda were parished to Schnellmannshausen (Saxon part), in the population the old place names were given the relative information "Unterster Hof" - for Schrapfendorf, "Mittelhof" for Hattengehau and "Oberster Hof" for Volteroda replaced. Volteroda experienced the strongest population growth and probably also profited from its proximity to the old Heerstrasse Lange Hessen . The hamlet was first mentioned in a document on December 24, 1528.

In 1964, as a token of its sovereignty, the town received a building known as the “municipal administration” on the main road. The living conditions and freedom of movement of the Volterodaers had increasingly deteriorated as a result of the division of Germany, the place was in the border area and could only be visited with a pass. The school-age children attended the elementary school in Schnellmannshausen, the secondary school in Treffurt and the grammar school in Eisenach.

Culture and sights

In the center of the village is the "fire brigade syringe house". The water syringe located there from 1913 is regularly demonstrated by the Volteroda Fire Brigade Association at parades and fire brigade parties. Almost all male residents of the village were or are involved in the Volteroda fire brigade, the association also shapes cultural life and ensures order and security in the district in accordance with the statutes. The volunteer fire brigade is alerted several times a year in emergencies, mostly traffic accidents on the accident-prone stretch of the federal highway 250 , but people are also called in for reinforcements in the event of a flood in the Werra or a fire.
