He was three times heavyweight champion in Pancrase , the forerunner of the Ultimate Fighting Championship , is a certified Thai boxing teacher and multiple European champion in Muay Thai . He has a fifth degree black belt in Kyokushin Karate and a second degree black belt in taekwondo . He is also the author of many books and made many videos about martial arts . Worth mentioning are his victories over Frank Shamrock , Masakatsu Funaki , Kevin Randleman , Guy Mezger and Tsuyoshi Kohsaka .

biography

Rutten, who was born in Tilburg in the Netherlands, became interested in martial arts when he saw The Man with the Death Claw in the cinema at the age of 12 . Then he wanted to learn to fight, especially with nunchucks . His conservative parents did not allow him to do this at first, but eventually he began to practice Taekwondo and received the second dan there . Then he learned Kyokushin karate . In the Hogeschool he was neither tall nor strong, and he had a skin disease on the hands, he therefore was occasionally bullied. (He was already a successful fighter at a class reunion five years later and he challenged those who previously tormented him to a friendly fight. No one accepted the challenge.) When he was twenty, he began Thai boxing . After fourteen consecutive knockouts , Rutten suffered his first defeat and was knocked out in turn. Although he claims that Kyokushin karate is the basis of his martial art, he has a well-balanced repertoire of fighting techniques.

Bas Rutten calls himself " El Guapo " (Spanish for "the pretty one"). His wife gave him this nickname. In his fighting punches and kicks were on the liver trademark Rutten. He calls this technique the "Liver Shot". He was also known for his rod jump , a jump he made in the ring every time after winning a fight. He jumped in the air and then spread his legs to do the splits.

Pancrase

Bas Rutten began his professional mixed martial arts career with the Japanese martial arts association Pancrase. In 1993 the Japanese catchers Masakatsu Funaki and Minoru Suzuki traveled to Holland to look for fighters for their new association "Hybrid Wrestling". Fighting on the ground was allowed there, but you were not allowed to hit your fists in the face. Pancrase became the forerunner of modern day mixed martial arts , and it gave birth to many well-known mixed martial arts fighters.

Rutten's lack of experience in ground fighting initially led to defeats against Masakatsu Funaki and Ken Shamrock , who then became King of Pancrase . His defeat by Frank Shamrock was also discussed controversially . In this fight the judges disagreed. Ken Shamrock also lost him in 1995, but then Bas beat the previously undefeated Minoru Suzuki and won the title of King of Pancrase for the first time . In 1996 he defeated Frank Shamrock and Masakatsu Funaki. He was also able to beat Jason Delucia and Guy Mezger and was three times King of Pancrase . He then gave up his title to have time for the birth of his second daughter. Rutten returned to Pancrase and scored eight more wins, making his winning streak 19 fights in a row.

Ultimate Fighting Championship

In 1998, Rutten joined the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), the largest mixed martial arts association in the United States . He won his first fight against Tsuyoshi Kohsaka with a KO. Next he competed against Kevin Randleman for the UFC heavyweight championship. This fight went into overtime, and Bas Rutten was narrowly declared the winner and heavyweight champion by referee decision. He gave up his title that same year, switched to middleweight division (his actual weight class) and tried to be the first to hold a UFC title in two weight classes.

While preparing for his next UFC fight in 1999, Rutten sustained several serious injuries, including a knee injury and a tear in his biceps . His doctors advised him to withdraw from mixed martial arts.

New career

After his retirement from martial arts, Rutten sought an acting career. He got some small roles in television series, for example in King of Queens . He then appeared in cheaply produced films such as Shadow Fury . In addition, he tried his hand at being a comedian . In 2005 he won an award in the “Best Comedy” category at the New York Short Film Festival. In addition, Rutten became a co-commentator at the Pride FC championships. Bas Rutten enjoyed great popularity with the fans within a very short time due to his humor and expertise. In April 2006 he announced that he would no longer be available for Pride FC because the constant flights to Japan were disruptive and he saw his family too rarely. He passed his commentary chair on to the fighter Frank Trigg . He also had a guest appearance in the video game Grand Theft Auto IV , in which he played himself as one of two presenters on The Men's Room .

Rutten is currently involved in three different television programs.

Activity as a trainer

Rutten was seen in the 2003 documentary The Smashing Machine: the life and times of extreme fighter Mark Kerr as trainer. He has been shown wrestling with Mark Kerr and vividly commented on his student's strengths and weaknesses.

In 2006 he coached a team for the new International Fight League , a mixed martial arts association that focuses on team fights. His team, the Anacondas, defeated the Silverbacks 3-2.

Rutten recently announced that he and Randy Couture would open a new martial arts center called the Legends Mixed Martial Arts Training Center in Hollywood . Mixed martial arts, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu , Muay Thai and boxing are trained there. In addition to Bas and Randy, several other well-known fighters and coaches will teach there, including Karo Parisyan , Jason Miller and Eddie Bravo .

Return to MMA

In May 2006, Bas announced his return to mixed martial arts competitions. He had clarified this with his doctors beforehand. His first intended opponent, Kimo Leopoldo , tested positive for stanozolol , an anabolic steroid , shortly before the fight . The substitute, Ruben "Warpath" Villareal , was knocked out by Rutten in the first round by a technical knockout. This increased the number of victories in a row to a remarkable 22. In the meantime, the striker ("bat") from Holland achieved more victories by giving up than by knocking out thanks to his impressive improvement in ground fighting.
