Mork vom Ork (original title: Mork & Mindy ) is an American sitcom with science fiction elements, which was broadcast on US television on ABC from 1978 to 1982 . The series is a spin-off from Happy Days and started there with a backdoor pilot episode . The actor Robin Williams gained international fame through the lead role of the alien Mork . A total of 95 episodes were created in four seasons.

action

The series is about the alien Mork from the planet Ork , who is supposed to observe the people and reports to his superior Orson at the end of each episode in the form of an ironic or soulful comment.

Mork flies to earth with his oversized space egg . He was a test tube baby , used as a greeting "Nano-Nano" (in the original: "Na-Nu Na-Nu"), can drink with his index finger and demonstrate telekinetic tricks. He sits on his face and sleeps hanging on a trapeze . He does not use violence. This was abolished on Ork .

Mork meets the young Mindy McConnell from the city of Boulder (Colorado) , who takes him in. She works in the music shop of her widowed father Fred , where her grandmother Cora also helps out and gives music lessons.

The jokes are usually based on the fact that, thanks to television, Mork had already acquired extensive knowledge of the primitive earthly civilization , especially US society, before his arrival , but the usual manners were difficult can customize. With his naive , direct, exuberant manner, he quickly offends or snubs people. In addition to Robin Williams' acting skills, the US American Original Version lives mainly from his talent for improvisation and pun .

The German dubbed version therefore suffers greatly from translation problems that can hardly be solved. The concise greeting with the ten-year-old black music student Eugene by pushing each other's buttocks with the words "Hamsti-Bamsti", for example, does not go back in the original to Mork's extraterrestrial customs and traditions, but to a parody of stereotypical greeting rituals and phrases by African-Americans .

After the very successful first season, three more were produced, but these were not so well received by the audience for a long time. In the second and third seasons, a romantic but platonic relationship develops between Mork and Mindy until they finally get married in the fourth season and have their son Mearth , played by Jonathan Winters , Robin Williams' mentor and idol. Mork's confrontation with the unfamiliar earthly everyday culture no longer seems so credible and loses its esprit. He's struggling to find paid work while Mindy is studying journalism and pursuing a career at a local television station. Mindy's father, to whose second wife Cathy Mindy has to get used to, and her grandmother are no longer an integral part of the plot. They are replaced by the siblings Jeanie and Remo Da Vinci from New York , who first open a snack bar and later a restaurant in Boulder. There are also Mindy's cousin Nelson Flavor , a vain handsome boy with political ambitions, and Mr. Bickley , the shy nagger , who lives on the ground floor under Mork and Mindy. Running Gag is the eccentric doomsday preacher and leader of the imaginary "Friends of Venus " Exidor .
