Do not mess with Zohan (Original title: You Do not Mess with the Zohan ) is an American comedy film from 2008, directed by Dennis Dugan with Adam Sandler in the lead role.

action

Zohan is a superhuman anti-terrorist specialist and the perfect one-man army for the Israel Defense Forces . However, he is disgusted by the hostilities in the Middle East and no longer wants to fight. In addition to his fondness for hummus , the lemonade Fizzy Bubblech and the hacky sack game , he dreams of leaving the country and becoming a hairdresser. His great role model is Paul Mitchell . But since nobody takes his wish seriously and he is even laughed at by his parents and considered homosexual when he tells them about his dream job, he fakes his death on his next assignment when he is used against his Palestinian arch enemy, the terrorist Fatusch . In the hold of an airplane, he gets to New York City unrecognized in the cage of two dogs named Scrappy and Coco . When he is asked for his name there, he names Scrappy Coco.

On the streets of New York City he helps the cyclist Michael when he is harassed by a driver. He receives accommodation with Michael and his mother Gail, who is sexually delighted by him. In a disco he is recognized as a zohan by the young Israeli Oori. Oori promises to keep his secret to himself and they become friends. He learns that the phantom, now revered as a folk hero, has now founded his own fast food chain in his home country under the name Phantom Muchentuchen .

After Zohan was turned away in numerous hairdressing salons, he finally managed to get a job in Rafaela's salon of the Palestinian Dalia, where, in addition to haircare, he served the older customers with charm and sex, which made the business extremely popular. The reservations about his Palestinian boss evaporate and over time he falls in love with Dalia.

After a while, Zohan is recognized by a Palestinian taxi driver who, together with like-minded people, informs Phantom after several attempted attacks, whereupon he immediately goes to New York. But a common threat finally causes both to get together: The real estate shark Walbridge wants to tear down the neighborhood, in which Jews and Arabs live largely peacefully, in order to build a new shopping center. He lets groups disguised as Arabs and Jews carry out arson attacks in order to sow discord. It also turns out that Dalia is Phantom's sister and that Phantom, like Zohan, is tired of his job and would rather sell shoes than carry out attacks.

After Walbridge is defeated, Israelis and Palestinians build their own shopping center together. Phantom eventually becomes a shoe seller and Zohan opens a hair salon with his wife Dalia. Finally, Zohan's parents agree to Zohan's wish, and his father willingly lets him cut his hair.

Reviews

The film received positive reviews of just 38% based on 185 reviews on the Rotten Tomatoes website .

“In the hairdresser comedy 'Don't mess with the mess', Sandler strives for nothing less than solving the threatening smoldering Middle East conflict. Admittedly, you have to go through a few layers of not very subtle jokes until the way out of hatred, war and suffering suddenly seems possible in the end. [...] The linguistic resemblance is primarily established, which is why 'Don't mess with the mess' should definitely be seen in the English original. The exaggeratedly harsh accent, the idiosyncratic grammar and the succinct sentence melody are not only quite funny, they obviously raise your speakers to a new level of understanding. "

- Katja Lüthge - Berliner Zeitung

“The average types to which Sandler is otherwise committed are discarded here in favor of an excessive fictional character who appears a bit like the counter-draft to Sacha Baron Cohen's Borat: Zohan is also a walking cultural stereotype (with which Sandler emphasizes his Jewish roots), he radebrecht English, offends against social etiquette, but proves to be more adaptable than his Kazakh colleague. "

- Dominik Kamalzadeh - The standard

“More decidedly than before, 'Don't mess with the mess' drives the Sandler infantility into sheer anarchy. For good and bad, everything seems possible at any moment. The cat as a soccer ball. Hands-free push-ups. Sex with the landlady who could be his mother. Love for a Palestinian woman. [...] Only in a state of total lack of seriousness becomes possible what is otherwise not possible in contemporary hyper-correct Hollywood. "

“The film transcends all boundaries of political correctness and good taste en passant, while its main actor Sandler does not shy away from self-humiliation in order to get a laugh. This ranges from the excessive exaggeration of role clichés, for example in the prominent role that chickpea pulp hummos has in the diet of the Jew Zohan, to the rubbing of genitals on everything the protagonist likes, to every conceivable form of misappropriation of Domestic and farm animals. All this, especially in connection with the broken English of Sandler's character, sometimes strongly reminds of Sacha Baron Cohen's Borat . "

- David Wölfle - Critic.de

"Entertaining nonsense with some downright comical running gags, but also blatant staging defects."
