Charlotte Rae (* 22. April 1926 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin as Charlotte Rae Lubotsky ; † 5. August 2018 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actress and singer .

Life

Charlotte Rae was born in Milwaukee to Jewish parents with Russian ancestors. Her mother Esther Ottenstein and her father Meyer Lubotsky had two other daughters. The oldest, Beverly († 1998), was an opera singer , the youngest, Mimi, is a musician and composer . Charlotte also came into contact with music early on.

After graduating from Shorewood High School in Wisconsin high school , she studied at Northwestern University in Evanston , Illinois, but dropped out. Her fellow students included later stars such as Paul Lynde , Charlton Heston , Martha Hyer , Patricia Neal and Agnes Nixon .

Charlotte Rae was married to the composer John Strauss (1920–2011), with whom she had two children. The couple divorced in 1976. She died in August 2018 at the age of 92 with her family.

Rae began her acting career in the theater. She played one of the leading roles in Pippin at the New Jersey Paper Mill Playhouse. She also played Mammy Yokum in the Broadway musical Li'l Abner . She was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1966 for her portrayal in Die Pickwickier, based on Charles Dickens ' novel . Three years later she was nominated for the same Best Actress Award for Morning, Noon, and Night .

Since the early 1950s, Rae has made numerous guest roles in television series. In 1978 she played matchmaker Bessie in the disaster film Firetrap, directed by Emmy Award winner Mel Stuart . She occasionally took on supporting roles in the cinema, for example as the mother of Woody Allen in the comedy Bananas (1971) or as a hairdresser in Don't Mess With The Mess (2008). In total, Rae has been in front of the camera for almost 100 film and television productions well into old age, most recently in 2015 in Ricki - Wie Familie can be seen with Meryl Streep .

Rae was best known to a wide audience through the role of housekeeper Edna Ann Garrett . She first played this character from 1978 in the sitcom Still Questions Arnold? , finally from 1979 as the main character in the spin-off sitcom The Facts of Life . In the series, she was seen at the side of Mindy Cohn , Nancy McKeon and George Clooney . After eight seasons, she left the show in 1986, and Rae's former classmate Cloris Leachman took on the lead role as Mrs. Garrett's sister Beverly Ann .
