Feuerfalle is both a disaster film and a drama from 1978. It describes the lives of four young migrant women. The script is based on the actual fire disaster in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory on March 25, 1911 in New York , in which 146 people, mostly girls and young women, were killed. Back then, around 500 people worked on three floors in the Triangle shirt factory, making $ 9 in a 56-hour week. The film premiered in Germany on May 7, 1983 on ZDF .

The fire strengthened the International Ladies 'Garment Workers' Union , an international association of workers and seamstresses. Furthermore, occupational health and safety regulations were introduced as a result.

action

Sonja Levin

Sonja Levin (Lauren Frost) comes from Poland with her parents and brother to find happiness in the USA. The young woman is torn between two worlds. Between Orthodox Jewish culture and the modern world. So she goes to the temple on Friday evening , but leaves it early on an excuse to go dancing. There Sonja is discovered by her family, and she receives a slap in the face from her father (Milton Selzer) in front of everyone . Sonja and her father argue about it, but the next morning the young woman asks her father for forgiveness. Your father thinks that the life of the Jews in Poland was still that of a family. In contrast, in the US everyone would live their own life. He asks his daughter what should become of the people here. Then his daughter replies: “We can dream. We can be who we want to be! " The father smiles and says: " Yes, when you are young. "

During the fire disaster, Sonja has to see her best friend Florence (Tovah Feldshuh) die before her eyes. But she herself can escape the fire. When she arrives at home, the appearance of the people believed dead triggers fear and horror . After a moment of shock , in which Sonja's mother is completely frozen, she realizes that her daughter is still alive and, together with the whole family, embraces her, crying. In memory of her deceased friend, Sonja ended up buying a hat that was much too expensive and that Florence had actually wanted to buy to catch a millionaire. As she strolls to the Easter parade with the survivors of the fire disaster, wearing the magnificent hat, she tells her friends about the wisdom of her deceased friend Florence: “ When you dance with a man, you don't have to do anything but smile. "

Florence Golden

Florence Golden also works in the shirt factory and dreams of marrying a millionaire. In addition, she would like to buy a hat that is very expensive. When Florence and Sonja are invited to the engagement party by Connie and Vinnie, Sonja says that she cannot come to the engagement party because the Shabbat has started and she has to go to the temple . She describes her fears as follows: “Father will kill me if I come to the temple too late!” Then Florence replied with humor and said: “Then he will kill you. But afterwards you'll come to the party! ” Sonja follows her friend's request and sneaks out of the temple. She goes to the party and dances there with her friend. While dancing, she confesses to Florence that she doesn't know what to say to a man while dancing. In the process she learns a wisdom from Florence. This means that a woman does not need to talk while dancing, but should only "smile, just smile" . During the fire, Florence does not leave the factory building as intended because she still has to get her coat. When Sonja searches for Florence, she discovers her friend on a table, with Florence standing with her back to a large window pane. Because of the smoke she can't see anything and is completely hysterical and screams: “I can't get out!” Sonja is standing at the table and calls to her friend: “Jump off the table! Here! Here!! Over here !!! “But Florence is blind from the smoke and turns away. In doing so, it breaks through the pane and falls down.

Connie Roselli

Connie Roselli comes from an Italian family and is engaged to Vinnie (Ted Wass), who is known for his promiscuity . During the disaster, Vinnie is looking for his fiancée because he only wants to leave the building with her. When he finally finds her, he kisses his fiancée. Connie fears that she will perish and just to be on the safe side puts her engagement ring on Vinnie's finger with the following words: “But if something happens to me. Take him ” and she kisses him. A few seconds later, Vinne is fatally injured by an exploding furnace in front of his fiancée.

Connie remains in shock in the burning factory building and sees a young man (Scott Mulhern) persuade young women to throw themselves to their deaths. He compares the fall with a "jump into a pool with cold water" . After the women have thrown themselves off, he waves Connie over and says that it is her turn. Connie replies that suicide is a mortal sin and compares the inferno of flames with the purgatory that she has to endure. Then the man (Scott Mulhern) throws himself out of the window. Firemen finally reach the burning room and Connie is carried out of the burning building by a firefighter. When she reached the bottom, she looked for the remains of her fiancé and recognized the cremated corpse by the engagement ring.

Because of her dirty clothes, Connie is called a whore by the young men when she arrives in the Italian neighborhood, while Connie's father (Jerome Guardino) believes that she was raped. It is only when she falls crying on his neck and tells him about the tragedy that he becomes aware of the catastrophe that his daughter was barely able to escape.

Rose Noble

Rose Edler works as one of the two foremen in the Triangle shirt factory and has been looking for a husband for a long time. To do this, she visits the matchmaker Bessie (Charlotte Rae) in the evening, where the orphan Freida (Lin Shaye), who is also looking for a husband, can be found. Bessie introduces Rose to Mo Pincus (Larry Gelman), a wealthy entrepreneur. Rose, however, loves Lou Ribin (David Dukes) a work colleague from the shirt factory. But she cannot imagine a future with him. So she says: " I'm still looking for someone whose head is not in the clouds"  ! While she would like him to work as a freelance tailor, Lou is a staunch trade unionist and wants to keep working in the shirt factory. There he supports the 38-year-old colleague Selma (Constance Pfeifer), who no longer manages the required quota. He saves them by appealing to all work colleagues: “ Who is going to donate one for Selma? Many of you weren't even born when she started here ”  ! After the necessary parts have been donated, he concludes: " Strength is only in unity"  ! Lou Ribin's back is badly injured in the fire and can no longer move. Rose rushes to Lou and tries to help him. Lou pushes Rose away from her and says, “Rose, you can still get through. Go immediately "  ! She answers energetically: "No"  ! He repeats his request "Rose, please, you have to get out of here immediately"  ! But Rose says: "No"  ! One last time he begs her: "Rose, please go"  ! Rose says crying: "No, my love, I won't go away without you"  ! Instead of saving her own life by escaping the fire, Rose remains with her lover in the sea of flames. Both recite the Shema to Yisrael and die together in the flames.

Other figures

Gina herself also works in the Triangle shirt factory and knows neither the country nor the language. That's why she visits the language school at New York University in the evening, where she is taught by the language teacher (Sean Roche) together with other students such as Mr. Himmelfarb (Wil Albert) and Mrs. Goldstein (Naomi Stevens). But the language teacher also tries to learn from his students and asks his student Mrs. Goldstein: "How is it that Jews, when they answer a question, always do it with a question" ? Thereupon Mrs. Goldstein replies with a smile: "Why not"  ?

Shortly before the fire disaster, Gina (Stacey Nelkin) is seduced by Connie's fiancé, who pays her many compliments . He calls her "The Queen of Palermo " and "A Madonna who works" . During the fire disaster, Gina also throws herself out of the window, but is caught by the fire fighters with a jumping sheet.

criticism

“The film tries to combine elements of tension with a social concern and historical reconstruction; Sometimes very emotional, but dense in the drawing of the environment, captivating from an acting perspective. "
