John Paul DeJoria
John Paul DeJoria (born April 13, 1944 in Los Angeles , California ) is co-founder of John Paul Mitchell Systems . He is known for having managed to become a billionaire as a former homeless person (see American Dream ).
Life
John Paul DeJoria's father was an immigrant from Italy , his mother was an immigrant from Greece . Before he was two years old, he was living with his brother with his divorced mother. DeJoria grew up in Los Angeles.
At the age of nine, he began doing several smaller jobs to support his family, including repairing bicycles, caretaking, selling encyclopedias , photocopiers , insurance and magazines . After graduating from school in 1962, he served on the USS Hornet (CV-12) .
After spending some time in marketing at Time Magazine , DeJoria joined Redken , a manufacturer of hair care products, in 1971 . There he held several positions, including as a sales representative, department head, branch manager and national manager. During this time DeJoria gained extensive experience in the sales, marketing and distribution of beauty products. Although he was very successful, he was fired after about five years because his methods did not match those of his manager. After that, DeJoria was employed by other companies where he was also able to increase sales enormously, but he was also laid off.
In 1980 he co-founded a hair care company with Paul Mitchell that would later become known as John Paul Mitchell Systems - with about $ 700 starting capital that he borrowed from his mother. After he started the business, he lived in a car with his son and funded his groceries by collecting empty bottles. He had no money to advertise his products, so he made them available to salons in the form of free samples. They didn't have to pay for the items if they weren't satisfied. It was the first time this strategy was applied to hair care products. It led John Paul Mitchell Systems to become one of America's fastest growing companies.
In 1989, John Paul DeJoria co-founded The Patrón Spirits Company with Martin Crowley . On June 13, 1993, he married Eloise DeJoria . According to Forbes Magazine , his net worth is $ 4.3 billion. He owns several estates, including in Las Vegas and Austin , and donates some of his fortune to charity. John Paul DeJoria has six children and four grandchildren.
