Happy Gilmore learned to play ice hockey from his father , with whom he also shared his fanatical enthusiasm for the sport. The mother left his father when he was little. His father is hit and killed by a puck during an ice hockey game , whereupon he grew up with his grandmother in Waterbury.

Gilmore is quick to get angry and angry. After finishing school, he earned his living doing various jobs. He is still pursuing his dream of becoming a professional ice hockey player and tries out ice hockey tryouts every year. However, unsuccessful every year because it is simply not good enough. One day the grandmother's house and facility are seized because she owes $ 270,000 in tax owed to the tax office . The grandmother has to move into a retirement home temporarily. If she does not pay off her debt within 90 days, her house will be sold.

Gilmore discovers that he is successful in golf with his hockey stroke : with his unconventional golf stroke with a run-up he can hit a golf ball around 400 meters (in the original: 400 yards ). The wide golf tee already brings him a small side income when betting. In one of these long stroke bets, the former professional golf player Chubbs Peterson becomes aware of him and persuades him to take part in the local golf tournament. When he wins that, he secures a place in the Pro Golf Tour , which is endowed with a high prize money.

Due to his unusual behavior and his special way of playing golf, he soon became a favorite with viewers and in the media. The favorite and formerly most popular professional golf shooter McGavin doesn't like that at all, he tries everything to push Gilmore out of the competition. After a while, Gilmore raised the money to buy back the house through prize money and additional advertising income. When he arrives at his grandmother's house, it is being auctioned off. McGavin outbids him and buys the house for $ 350,000. He threatens Gilmore to demolish the house if he doesn't leave the tour. Responsible for Public Relations in charge of the tour Virginia Venit persuaded him not to be intimidated and believes that he can beat McGavin in the Gulf. Gilmore challenges him: If he loses to him, he would voluntarily retire - but if he wins against him, he gets the house back. McGavin agrees.

Gilmore visits Chubbs Peterson and asks him to teach him. He teaches him the intricacies of golf and, above all, teaches him to control his tantrums, since you can only win with calm and serenity. Peterson later dies in an accident. Gilmore finally succeeds in defeating shooter McGavin thanks to an extraordinary putt . He wins back the golf tournament and his grandmother's house.
