Frances Bay

Frances Goffman Bay (born January 23, 1919 in Winnipeg , Manitoba , Canada ; † September 15, 2011 in Tarzana , Los Angeles , California ) was a Canadian-born and US-based character actress who was quirky by portraying older people Women became known in film and television.

Life

Frances Bay grew up in Dauphin , Manitoba . Her younger brother was the renowned sociologist Erving Goffman . His daughter from his second marriage is the American sociologist and author Alice Goffman .

Prior to World War II, Bay was acting professionally in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

During the war, Frances Bay hosted a radio show on Canadian Radio, Everybody's Program , intended for overseas military service personnel.

Bay starred in several Seinfeld episodes. She also appeared in Charmed , Twin Peaks and Grey's Anatomy . She starred alongside Sam Neill in The Powers of Madness (1994) by John Carpenter or alongside Matthew Broderick in the comic book version Inspector Gadget (1999).

But she is best known for her role as the odd, loving grandma in the film Happy Gilmore .

In 2008 she was inducted on Canada's Walk of Fame . Bay was married, their only son died at the age of 23.

Frances Bay died on September 15, 2011 at the age of 92.
