In addition, his mother Anne Meara converted to Judaism before he was born. It was clear early on that he and his sister Amy Stiller would follow in their parents' footsteps professionally. His parents often made cameo appearances in his films.

After numerous short films that Stiller made with his father's Super 8 camera, he made an appearance on the television series Kate McShane at the age of ten . He later dropped out and made a parody of the film The Color of Money , in which he played the role of Tom Cruise . In 1987 the film was Saturday Night Live aired what Stiller national prominence and a role in the Steven Spielberg production The Empire of the Sun earned. In the late 1980s he could be seen regularly on Saturday Night Live , especially in the role of "Tom Crooze". From MTV he got his own TV show in 1990, which was broadcast by FOX from 1991 . His next directorial effort, The Cable Guy - The pain in the ass with Jim Carrey (1996), received mixed reviews from the public and media. In Flirting with Disaster (director: David O. Stiller made his breakthrough in 1998 with Crazy About Mary . In 2000 he had another huge hit with the comedy My Bride, Her Father and I , in which he starred alongside Robert De Niro . Another sequel appeared in 2010 under the title My wife, our children and I , in which his sister Amy Stiller also plays.

His German voice actor has been Oliver Rohrbeck since 1998 .
