The ice princes (original title: Blades of Glory; in German : blades of fame) is an American comedy film about figure skating by Josh Gordon and Will Speck from 2007.

action

At the fictional World Winter Games in Stockholm in 2002 (based on the Olympic Winter Games ), the joint individual champions Chazz Michael Michaels and Jimmy MacElroy were forever excluded from the men's individual competitions because of a fight. After three and a half years, they decide to put their differences aside and band together by exploiting a loophole in the rulebook. It turns out that there is one category they can both compete in: pair skating . This event is usually reserved for same-sex couples and the two can expect stiff competition. The brother-sister team of Stranz and Fairchild van Waldenberg, which was the undisputed winning team of the pair skating, also belongs to the competition. The van Waldenbergs will stop at nothing to eliminate the two rivals. Finally, they persuaded their little sister Katie, who has meanwhile started a romance with Jimmy, to turn Chazz Michael Michaels and Jimmy MacElroy against each other. After this initially succeeds in a rather unfortunate way, Fairchild van Waldenberg more or less unintentionally clears up Jimmy when she locks him up in a toilet cubicle in the winter sports arena before the finals. Meanwhile, Chazz is chased by Stranz. In the end, however, both Jimmy and Chazz manage to appear in the arena at the fictional winter games in Montreal in time. In the end, they also win gold when they perform the dangerous "Iron Lotus", although Chazz has to end the intrigues of the van Waldenbergs with a broken ankle.

Real figure skaters on the set

background

  • Filming was suspended for a brief period because Jon Heder broke an ankle while doing figure skating training for the film.
  • The figure skating scenes were filmed at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena .
  • Jimmy's peacock costume is a parody of Johnny Weir's The Swan costume. He said that he was "flattered" by this parody.
  • The Iron Lotus is a parody of The Cutting Edge . Both figures are physically impossible.

criticism

The Rotten Tomatoes website gave the film a score of 64 out of 100 based on 35 reviews and a score of 7.1 out of 10 based on audience votes.

Marjorie Baumgarten writes in the Austin Chronicle : “The egg princes - although slightly amusing, the film has the unpleasant musty smell of a pitcher that has gone to the well one too often: Ooh, let's dress Ferrell like an elf - or a presenter or a NASCAR - Driver - and see what happens. "

For Joe Morgenstern of the Wall Street Journal, however , the film is "blissfully stupid, triumphantly tasteless and incredibly funny."

The lexicon of the international film judges: "The very solidly staged clothes largely avoid obvious jokes about homosexuality and entertain in a good mood thanks to the two convincing actors."
