Karlheinz Dietz

Karlheinz Dietz (born May 1, 1947 in Regensburg ) is a German ancient historian .

Dietz received his doctorate in 1975 at the University of Regensburg under Adolf Lippold , whose assistant he was from 1973 to the beginning of 1981. He then worked as a Scientific Council, since 1984 as Senior Councilor at the Commission for Ancient History and Epigraphy of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI). He completed his habilitation in 1984 and taught from 1985 until his retirement in 2012 as professor of ancient history at the University of Würzburg . He initially held the professorship of Hans-Joachim Gehrke, and in November 1998 he succeeded Dieter Timpe. On April 1st, 2012 Rene Pfeilschifter succeeded him.

Dietz's research focuses on the Roman imperial period including late antiquity , history, geography and inscriptions of the Alpine and Danube countries (especially Raetia ) in Roman times.

Dietz is a corresponding (since 1988) or full (since 1997) member of the DAI. From 1997 to 2011 he was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Commission for Ancient History and Epigraphy of the DAI. At the Bavarian Academy of Sciences he was a member of the commission for the archaeological research of the late Roman Raetia from 1986 to 1996 and has been a member of the commission for the comparative archeology of the Roman Alpine and Danube countries since 1997. He is also a member of the Frankfurt Scientific Society.
