Georg Friedrich Unger (born June 14, 1826 in Bayreuth , † October 11, 1906 in Würzburg ) was a German ancient historian .

Life

Georg Friedrich Unger attended the high school in Bayreuth and studied classical philology in Erlangen (with Ludwig von Döderlein and Karl Friedrich Nägelsbach ) and Göttingen (with Karl Friedrich Hermann , Ernst von Leutsch and Friedrich Wilhelm Schneidewin ) from 1844 to 1849 . Unger passed the state examination in Erlangen with excellent results.

Unger began his career in the Bavarian school service in 1851 as a candidate in Kulmbach. In the following year he moved to his hometown Bayreuth, where he was appointed high school assistant in 1852. In 1853 he went to study at the Latin school in Wunsiedel, where he taught for a year and a half. In 1855 he switched to the gymnasium in Hof and stayed there for more than twenty years. In 1868 he was appointed high school professor and in 1875 rector.

In Hof, Unger was able to deepen his scientific work in addition to his school service. He initially wrote studies on the early history of the Greeks, but soon found his research focus in Greek and Roman chronology . His work appeared in the journal Philologus , as a supplement to the school program of the Hof grammar school and from 1873 also in the reports of the meetings of the Royal Bavarian Academy of Sciences , which Unger elected as a corresponding member in 1873.

Due to his scientific achievements, Unger was appointed full professor of ancient history at the University of Würzburg in 1877 . In Würzburg Unger worked in teaching and research until the end of his life. He was also a member of the examination committee for secondary schools, which he headed on a rotating basis. In the last few years of his life, a throat disease forced him to stop his exams and lectures.

Unger's work deepened knowledge of the Greek and Roman chronology in many areas. His results have been contested in detail several times, but the impetus of his work has been recognized in the professional world. Unger proved his comprehensive mastery of the area through his contribution to the Handbuch der Altertumswwissenschaft (1F: Chronologie, ²1892).
