Rene Pfeilschifter (* 1971 in Cham ) is a German ancient historian .

Rene Pfeilschifter graduated from the Robert-Schuman-Gymnasium in Cham in 1990. Then he did his military service. From 1991 to 1997 Pfeilschifter studied Ancient History, Greek Philology and Latin Philology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . He finished his studies in 1997 with a master's thesis on the historical-critical commentary on Plutarch's Vita des Flamininus . Then Pfeilschifter worked from 1997 to 2002 as a research assistant and from 2002 as a research assistant at the Chair for Ancient History at the Technical University of Dresden .

Pfeilschifter received his doctorate in 2002 with a thesis on Titus Quinctius Flamininus and the Roman policy on Greece around 200 BC, initiated by Jakob Seibert in Munich and supervised by Martin Jehne in Dresden . From 2002 to 2004 he was a research assistant on the ancient history sub-project of the Collaborative Research Center 537 "Institutionality and Historicity" at the TU Dresden. From 2004 to 2006, Pfeilschifter was a research assistant at the Chair of Ancient History. From 2006 to 2008 he was a Feodor Lynen Research Fellow from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at Pennsylvania State University . Since 2008 he has been a research assistant at the Chair for Ancient History at the TU Dresden.

Pfeilschifter's habilitation took place in 2011 with the work Der Kaiser und Konstantinopel. Communication and conflict resolution in the metropolitan network of interests from the late fourth to the early seventh century . In the 2011/2012 winter semester he was a substitute professor for Ancient History at the University of Duisburg-Essen . In January 2012, Pfeilschifter accepted an offer at the University of Würzburg for a W3 professorship for Ancient History. On April 1, 2012, he succeeded Karlheinz Dietz . Pfeilschifter has been dean of studies at the Philosophical Faculty I since 2013 and was the managing director of the Würzburg Center for Classical Studies from 2013 to 2015.

Pfeilschifter's research focuses on Hellenism , the Roman Republic and late antiquity . He presented several papers on the political culture of the Roman Republic.
