Ivan von Müller
Iwan Philipp Eduard Müller , from 1889 Ritter von Müller , (born May 20, 1830 in Wunsiedel , † July 20, 1917 in Munich ) was a German classical philologist and educator who worked as a professor at the Universities of Erlangen (1864-1893) and Munich (1893-1906) worked. He is especially known as the founder of the Handbook of Ancient Studies (HdA).
Life
Iwan Müller was the son of the piano and organ builder Johann Christoph Müller (1792–1863) and his wife Auguste Friederike geb. Glaß (1803-1870). He first attended the Latin school in Wunsiedel, then the grammar school in Hof . In 1848 he moved to the University of Erlangen and initially studied mathematics and classical philology, but under the influence of his academic teachers Ludwig Döderlein and Karl Friedrich Nägelsbach turned to philology in particular. In November 1853, Müller passed the state examination and worked as a high school teacher in Ansbach . Here he married Luise Hoffmann (1840–1923) in 1860, the daughter of the local high school teacher Carl Hoffmann (1800–1872). With her he had a son. Müller later moved to Zweibrücken and Erlangen , where he was appointed successor to the late university professor Döderlein in 1864 - without a doctorate - because of his teaching success.
During his time as professor of classical philology and education in Erlangen, Müller was dean of the faculty of philosophy three times (1870/1871, 1880/1881, 1885) and prorector of the university in 1878/1879. His teaching and publication activities have earned him numerous honors over the decades at the university. In 1889, Prince Regent Luitpold awarded him the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown . With the award, the elevation to the personal nobility was connected and he was allowed to call himself "Ritter von Müller" after the entry in the nobility register . In 1909 he received the commander of this order. Since 1899 Müller was also a Knight of the Second Class of the Order of Merit of St. Michael .
As one of the leading educators of his time, he was a member of the Bavarian Supreme School Council in 1890 and 1893.
In 1893, after Rudolf Schöll's death, he was appointed to the chair of classical philology at the University of Munich , which he held until his retirement in 1906. Albert Rehm was his successor .
Services
In his almost fifty-year scientific career, Müller tried to gain a general understanding of ancient studies. His most important achievement is the establishment of the Handbook of Classical Studies in 1885, whose task Müller understood to be the systematic presentation of the current state of research in the various fields of Classical Studies. Until 1913, Müller remained the sole editor of the monumental work, which is continued to this day and is considered the standard work.
With his critical editions of Galen's writings , Müller prepared the ground for the Corpus Medicorum Graecorum company , which was founded in 1908 by Hermann Diels . Müller also dealt with stylistics and grammar and published numerous textbooks for schoolchildren and students.
