Alfred Klotz

Alfred Klotz (born June 15, 1874 in Zittau , † January 10, 1956 in Erlangen ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Alfred Klotz attended the Royal High School in Leipzig from 1883 to 1892 , which he left with the school leaving certificate. He then studied classical philology at the University of Leipzig from 1892 and received his doctorate in 1896 under Otto Ribbeck , who, like Otto Immisch, strongly influenced him. In 1905 he went to the University of Strasbourg as a private lecturer and in 1911 was offered a professorship at the German Charles University in Prague , which he accepted. He followed another call to a chair in Erlangen on April 1, 1920. In the winter semester 1930/31 he was rector of the University of Erlangen and was retired in 1939 with the title of a secret government councilor, but remained a full professor and continued to give lectures in Latin.

On behalf of the managing director of Buchner Verlag, Wilhelm Ament , who tried to improve the poor order situation with ideologically adapted books, he wrote a pamphlet on races , but the pamphlet did not meet the requirements of the authorities and was a failure. On the other hand, in the summer of 1944 he drew the attention of the students at Erlangen University to the exodus of the Helvetii from their settlement areas as an example of an irresponsible and power-hungry leader instigated but catastrophically failed habitat war.

Honors

In 1944, Adolf Hitler awarded Klotz the Goethe Medal for Art and Science .
