Siegfried Reiter

Siegfried Reiter (born February 12, 1863 in Neuraußnitz , † 1943 in Auschwitz concentration camp ) was an Austrian classical philologist .

Life

Siegfried Reiter studied classical philology at the University of Vienna (at Theodor Gomperz , Wilhelm von Hartel and Karl Schenkl ) in 1885 with a metric work to Greek tragedians doctorate and worked as a high school teacher, since 1896 in Prague.

He completed his habilitation at the University of Prague (1901) and taught Greek courses. In 1913 he was appointed adjunct professor, in 1919 real associate professor, and in 1922 full professor and chair holder. In the academic year 1927/1928 he served as dean of the Philosophical Faculty. Since his chair was initially not filled after his retirement , he held Greek courses for Latin students until 1938.

As a researcher, Reiter stood out particularly through his critical text editions. He participated in the Vienna Church Fathers Corpus ( Corpus scriptorum ecclesiasticorum latinorum ; CSEL) and in the Philon edition by Leopold Cohn and Paul Wendland . He also published the extensive correspondence between the philologists Friedrich August Wolf and Karl Otfried Müller , which were supplemented by supplementary volumes after his death.

During the Nazi era , Reiter was brought to the Theresienstadt ghetto in 1942 and from there deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp in autumn of the same year , where he died a few months later.
