Klaus Stiewe

Klaus Stiewe (born October 14, 1927 in Detmold ; † June 29, 1987 in Erlangen ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Stiewe in 1954 at the Georg-August University of Göttingen with a thesis on "The narrative style of the Homeric Demeterhymnos " doctorate and later moved to the University of Münster , where he joined in 1968 with the publication "The image of the tyrant in Polybius and Livy " habilitated . In 1970 he received a lectureship in classical philology there ; in the same year he became an adjunct professor, and in 1971 scientific councilor and professor. Stiewe accepted an offer from Erlangen in 1975 and took up his position on March 5, 1975 as a full professor and chair holder of classical philology. From the winter semester 1978/79 he was head of the Institute for Ancient Languages. In 1986 he retired and retired.

One of Stiewe's outstanding achievements, in collaboration with Niklas Holzberg, was the compilation and processing of research results on the ancient Greek historian Polybios in the publication of the same name with contributions by Hartmut Erbse , Kurt von Fritz , Frank Walbank , Wilfried Nippel , Edwin Graeber and others. His many years of work was interrupted in the spring of 1979 by a stay of several months in hospital and a long rehabilitation, but was successfully ended in 1982 after his recovery.
