Kurt Witte (born November 21, 1885 in Posen , † June 18, 1950 in Erlangen ) was a German classical philologist .

After attending school in Poznan and studying in Breslau and Berlin, the son of an elementary school teacher received his doctorate in 1908 in Breslau. In 1910, Witte completed his habilitation at the University of Münster , where at the end of 1916 he became an unofficial professor. In the following year he went to the University of Greifswald as a permanent adjunct professor . In 1920 Witte was appointed to a chair at the University of Erlangen , which he held until his death.

Witte's research focused on Greek ( Homer ) and Roman poetry, especially the Augustan period ( Virgil , Horace ). From 1911 to 1923, on behalf of Wilhelm Kroll, he was co-editor of the second series (R-Z) of the Realencyclopadie of Classical Classical Studies , for which he also wrote articles himself. Under his aegis (partly because of the difficulties of the First World War ) only four half-volumes of the series were published. After his departure, Karl Mittelhaus was responsible for editing the second row .

Since 1911 Witte was married to a daughter of the ancient historian Otto Seeck .
