From 1925 to 1932 he was director of the Kassel Art Academy. Due to the 2nd Prussian Emergency Ordinance , the Kassel Art Academy was closed in 1932. To compensate for the loss of the director's position, Witte was offered the management of the Villa Romana in Florence. During the time of National Socialism , he was dismissed from his post at the Villa Romana in 1935 due to his wife's Jewish descent and retired. Witte moved to Hanover - Buchholz with his wife Clara . Even under the pressure of the new rulers, he did not give up his marriage to his Jewish wife, and so she was able to survive the Nazi era. Curt Witte died on November 1st, 1959 in Hanover.

The art historian Rainer Zimmermann counts Curt Witte among the representatives of the lost generation and expressive realism .
