Life

Susemihl was the son of the general practitioner Detlef G. Susemihl. After taking private lessons at home, he attended the Güstrow Cathedral School from 1841 . From 1845 he studied classical philology at the University of Leipzig . In 1846 he was reciprocated in the Corps Misnia Leipzig . As an inactive he moved to the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin . In 1848 he taught as a teacher at Domgymnasium in Güstrow , 1850, he was in casting Dr. phil. PhD. In 1852 Susemihl took a position as an assistant teacher at the Schwerin grammar school and qualified as a professor for classical philology in Greifswald . In 1856 he was appointed an extraordinary professor there. In 1863, the Pomeranian State University appointed him full professor. From 1875 to 1876 Susemihl was rector of the Royal University of Greifswald . Until 1898 he taught at the university. In the last years of his life he devoted himself - almost blind - to an Attic literary history that remained unfinished. Susemihl died of pleurisy during a vacation trip to Florence. He was buried in the local evangelical cemetery.

Franz Susemihl gained a great reputation, especially in professional circles, as a translator of the works of the Greek philosophers Plato and Aristotle . By his 70th birthday, his scientific work already comprised around 11,000 printed pages. In recognition of his services in the field of classical philology, the Prussian state government appointed him a secret councilor in 1892. As the first university professor, Susemihl has also been involved in the Greifswald city council from 1874 onwards.

In 1862 he married Hedwig Marie Barthold (* 1832 † 1899), a daughter of the Greifswald historian Friedrich Wilhelm Barthold . The marriage remained childless. After her death he married Luise Hay (* 1843, † 1911) in 1900.
