William M. Calder III

William Musgrave Calder III (born September 3, 1932 in Brooklyn , New York ) is an American classical philologist . His specialty is the history of classical studies.

William Calder began studying Classical Philology at Harvard University in 1950 . From 1960 to 1976 he taught at Columbia University in New York , from 1976 to 1988 at the University of Colorado in Boulder , and since 1988 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign .

He achieved international importance through his research on the history of classical studies. He dealt with Karl Otfried Müller , Theodor Mommsen , Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff , Hermann Diels , Werner Jaeger , Heinrich Gomperz , Theodor Gomperz , George Cornewall Lewis , George Grote , Tycho von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff , Heinrich Schliemann , Otto Jahn , Eduard Meyer , Friedrich Gottlieb Welcker and Gilbert Murray . He is particularly interested in the structures of the subject and its integration into politics and society, in particular the interactions between research on classical antiquity and the Prussian and later German state in the 19th and 20th centuries. In this context he edited the correspondence of several well-known classical scholars and ancient historians. Since 1990 he has been a member of the Academy of Charitable Sciences in Erfurt .

Calder's grandfather, William M. Calder, was an American politician and senator from New York .
