Michael Erbe (born September 6, 1940 in Berlin ) is a German historian .

Michael Erbe graduated from the French Gymnasium in Berlin in 1959 and then studied history and classical philology at the Free University of Berlin. After completing his doctorate in medieval history at the Free University of Berlin (FU) in 1967, he became assistant professor for modern history there in 1970 and completed his habilitation in 1974 with a biography of the Dutch-French humanist François Baudouin (also spelled: Bauduin) in modern history .

From 1975 to 1989 he held a professorship for European history of the early modern period at the Free University of Berlin, and from 1985 to 1989 he was the first vice-president of this university. From 1989 until his retirement in 2005 he was a full professor for modern history at the University of Mannheim .

He is a member of the Historical Commission in Berlin . His main areas of research are modern western European history with a focus on constitutional, social, religious and intellectual history.
