Otto Seel

Otto Seel (born January 14, 1907 in Annweiler , † February 11, 1975 in Erlangen ) was a German classical scholar .

Life

The son of a royal Bavarian tax collector attended elementary school in Annweiler until 1917 and then the humanistic grammar school in Landau . After graduating from high school in 1926, he studied natural sciences for two semesters at the University of Freiburg and the University of Munich . He then began studying Classical Philology in Frankfurt , moved back to Munich after two semesters and then to the University of Erlangen after another semester . There he completed his habilitation in 1935 with the font Hirtius. Investigations into the pseudocaesarian Bella and the Balbusbrief and received a lectureship for classical philology and ancient history in Erlangen in 1936 . After his appointment as a regular associate professor in 1940, he was drafted into military service, so that on August 18, 1943 he was appointed full professor “in the field”.

After the end of the war he was confirmed as a lecturer again in 1949 and appointed as an adjunct professor. In 1950 he was initially appointed to the chair in classical philology, which had become vacant due to the death of Kurt Witte, and in 1951 was appointed full professor and holder of this chair, which he held until his retirement in 1972.

The Otto-Seel-Preis was named after him, a habilitation award for young scientists that was donated annually by the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg until 2000 and awarded by the Philosophical Faculty.

Walter Burkert , Gerhard Pfohl and Günter Wojaczek count among Seel's students .
