Ferdinand Heerdegen

Eugen Gottfried Ferdinand Heerdegen (born December 7, 1845 in Nuremberg , † 1930 in Erlangen ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

After studying classical philology, which he began in Erlangen in 1863/64 - he joined the Christian student union Uttenruthia in 1863 - and continued in Bonn , Berlin , Munich and Leipzig , he completed his habilitation in 1876 at the University of Erlangen , where he became a private lecturer. From 1882 he was a freelance lecturer until he became associate professor in April 1888 and finally full professor in September 1902. After he had worked alongside Iwan von Müller , Eduard Wölfflin , Adolf Römer and August Luchs for a few years and his achievements, especially in Latin semasiology and lexicography , were very much appreciated by them, he was given his own newly created chair. Kurt Witte continued this series when Heerdegen was released from the obligation to hold lectures in 1920. However, he remained co-director of the Classical Philology Department until 1923.

After his death, he bequeathed his book collection with around 1000 volumes to the University Library in Erlangen.
