Gerhard Pfohl

Gerhard Alois Pfohl (born February 16, 1929 in Böhmisch Eisenstein ; † June 29, 2016 in Nuremberg ) was a German classical philologist , epigraphist and medical historian .

Live and act

Pfohl was born the son of the merchant Alois Pfohl and his wife Elisabeth. His family was expelled from Czechoslovakia after the Second World War and lived in Regen in the Bavarian Forest from 1946 .

After graduating from the Metten Benedictine Abbey in 1948, Pfohl studied Classical Philology at the Philosophical-Theological University of Regensburg . In 1949 he switched to the University of Erlangen , where he was shaped by Alois Gotsmich , Friedrich Stroh and Otto Seel . After the teaching examination in Greek, Latin and German in the summer of 1952, Pfohl worked from November 24, 1952 at the Gymnasium Fridericianum in Erlangen . In the fall of 1953 he was transferred to the New High School in Nuremberg . On 19 December 1953 he was at the University of Erlangen Dr. phil. PhD . In 1956 Pfohl married Alma Linder, from which three children emerged.

In addition to his work in high school, Pfohl also continued his research. He wrote numerous articles for the Anzeiger für die Antiquities , which was edited at the University of Innsbruck . At this university , Pfohl completed his habilitation in 1967 for the subject “Greek epigraphy in the context of classical philology” as an associate professor at the University of Innsbruck.

From 1965 to 1976 Pfohl worked as a lecturer at the University of Erlangen, where he held medical-historical and epigraphic exercises. In 1973 he was appointed associate professor and in 1974 titular associate professor. On July 15, 1977 he became professor and institute director for medical history and medical sociology at the medical faculty of the Technical University of Munich . Pfohl retired in 1994 and lived in Nuremberg.

Gerhard Pfohl was involved in numerous social projects in the Holy Land . In 1974 he was appointed Knight of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher by Cardinal Grand Master Maximilien Cardinal de Fuerstenberg and invested on May 4, 1974 in Düsseldorf by Cardinal Lorenz Jaeger , Grand Prior of the German Lieutenancy . Most recently he was a Grand Officer of the Papal Order of Knights (Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem). Pfohl was also a member of the Order of Malta .
